Went out last night and had a nice fish and chip meal, I estimated the carb amount and bolused as normal, plus a small multi wave on top . Must have over estimated! :( I ate at 19.21, tested at 21.26 and was 3.7 (had jelly babies) 21.41 - 3.7 (more jelly babies) 21.56 - 3.1 (more jelly babies) 22.16 - 2.5 😱 (large glass of orange juice) 22.37 - 3.8 (more jelly babies) 22.55 - 2.8 (more ******* jelly babies !!) 23.10 - 4.9.......05.24 - 19.0!! aghhhhhh!

Should have had toast at about 10pm.....Diabetes!....just when you thought it was going so well!

We all get it wrong sometimes. Unfortunately diabetes is not an exact science. I hope you are feeling OK now

Oooooooooooooooops :D Glad you are in one piece though.

Such a learning curve isn't it! 🙂 I'd say longer on the multi wave next time. For meals like that, I follow Gary Scheiner's advice: 50/50 over 2 hours, then +50% basal for 4 hours. I tweak and change for what I feel will work.

Thanks Caroline and Sue.....back on track now!

Interesting Shiv, I hadn't considered upping my basal, might be worth a trial. My major problem last night was too much bolus up front (I had no packaging to read for carbs and didn't have carbs and cals with me), if I had multi waved more, my hypo would have been even worse, I should have reduced my bolus and raised my multi wave or just multi waved... or raised basal for a couple of hours........or just had a salad! 😉

When it goes wrong, boy does it go wrong! Glad to hear that you are back on track now Phil, and have a potential strategy for next time (the salad sounds the simplest! 🙂)

Thanks Alan.....ahem...you really need to change your avatar! 😉

I feel for you Phil!!

I had a similar one last week where I was testing and hypo every 15 minutes for 2 hours!! (no idea why though).

Glad you're ok now though....don't we all love a challenge?!!

I haven't quite got the hang of Hypo's yet - I always over medicate and go really high! I'm trying to stop this though! getting better slowly... But yes I have done this a few times too! 🙂 Glad your okay!

...I used to pile my self with sugary stuff when hypo, didn't really know any different (and wasn't told) but 15g of fast acting carb and retest 15 mins later normally does the trick. For me that is a glass of orange juice or a glass of coke or 4 or 5 jelly babies.....nearly always works 🙂

Interesting to read that approach Shiv. My tried and trusted chipshop technique is 60:40 dual wave over 3 hours which usually works well. Might have to play with the extra basal approach too for other tricky meals - pasta I'm yet to crack on the pump!

Mike, I do 70/30 multi wave over 3 hours for pasta and hasn't failed me yet!.......amazingly! 😉

My pasta - and rice ! - strategy is 40/60 over 3 hours. Doesn't work for pasta (nothing ever has, why should that change!) but it does for rice. I wouldn't do it for the amount of chips I eat though although I'd have one first without bolusing to see how greasy they are first before actually deciding which way to do it.

I am not that great a fan of fish and chips, I have to say. I'd most likely choose something other than fish - tinned roe if they have it ! - it's small so less batter to worry about carbs in that and the chip portions are so vast at our chippy, that I just have a small amount of Pete's and we share a pot of peas.

TW and Phil - Thanks both. All good info to add into the pot!

(I never had any bother with pasta on MDI 😱)

Mike, did you used to split injections with pasta? That used to work for me.... so I tried to use the same principle with my pump.
