Got Blood Test Results Today

After having a lot of symptoms for over a month I decided to see the doctor on Tuesday, I got my Hb1AC results today and I'm at 121 mmol/mol which seems incredibly high.

I was asked to book an appointment to discuss the results and next steps but they have booked me in for next Thursday a whole week away.

Looks like I'm in for a nerve-racking week while I wait to see what they have to say.

Hello @ScrompinNompin and welcome to the forum. My first hba1c was also in 3 figures so I understand your anxiety pending your appointment.
After you have discussed your results you will probably have a lot of questions. Please reach out to the good people on here with any queries or concerns you have. Nothing is considered trivial or silly.
I found it very helpful and supportive while I came to terms with my diagnosis and struggled to find good sources of information. The Learning Zone on Diabetes UK website is also a good resource.

It'll pass....in those situations I say to myself 'right it's as long as a week ago and that soon went' keep the body and especially the mind busy and don't worry so much, they'll get you sorted and you'll find great support on here.
Best wishes

Welcome to the forum
Sorry to hear of your diagnosis but it sometimes can be a relief that you have an explanation for symptoms and high blood glucose would be the reason.
I would expect with such a high level you will be prescribed some medication and advised to make some dietary changes. I know it seems a long time to wait but meanwhile there is plenty you can do to help yourself. Looking at your diet and making a food diary of everything you eat and drink and try to estimate how many carbohydrates you are having. It is ALL carbohydrates which convert to glucose so foods like potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, breakfast cereals as well as the more obvious cakes, biscuits, sugary drinks, pastry and tropical fruits which are going to be the foods you will need to cut out or reduce portions of and base meals on meat, fish, eggs, cheese, dairy, vegetables, salads and fruit like berries. Be careful as some GPs and diabetic nurses give rather outdated dietary advice and make people feel they cannot eat anything bar lettuce leaves and chicken and water to drink or they have to have carbs with every meal, that is far from the truth.
Have a look at this link as it gives good explanation of various options for managing the condition but focuses on a low carb approach.

Welcome to the forum @ScrompinNompin
and also welcome to the I scored a triple figured Hba1c (on diagnosis) club

Welcome to the forum @ScrompinNompin

Let us know how things go on Thursday.

How have you been feeling? Have you been tired? Thirsty? Going to the loo a lot? Have you been losing weight without meaning to? Has this all come on very suddenly? Any diabetes in your close family?

Just worth mentioning in passing (though don’t worry unduly about it) - Be on the look out for nausea this week, just in case. And if you experience abdominal pain, shortness of breath, or a weird fruity/pear-drop smell on your breath it’d be prudent to go to A&E. Your age is just the time where different flavours of diabetes can get mixed up, and while diabetes is generally a slow moving foe, there are times around diagnosis where some types can get a bit feisty.

Hi @ScrompinNompin , welcome to the Forum where you can expect help and support from a bunch of friendly people 🙂 Let us know how you get on ....

Yeah all of those symptoms plus some blurred vision is what prompted me to get the test, no history of it in my family.

The week is actually going quicker than I expected, just trying to focus on eating healthier and getting more active in the meantime. It doesn't help that I'm moving house and starting a new job this week so a whole lot going on in my head right now!

Thanks for all the reassurance, tips and advice on what to look out for so far everyone it's been really helpful.

If you’ve lost weight unexpectedly @ScrompinNompin that could be a sign of Type 1 diabetes (which is an auto-immune condition and nothing to do with diet). When they did your HbA1C test, did they also do a fingerprick glucose test to see what your blood sugar was at that moment, and did they test your urine for ketones?

@ScrompinNompin welcome to the forum. At least you made time to go to the doctor when you had so much else to deal with. Given your age and no family history keep an open mind. You may be type 1 rather than 2. Until I joined the forum I had only heard of the exPM Teresa May who was diagnosed in her fifties with type 1. I had assumed type 1 child young adult type 2 fifties onwards. I learned you cannot predict. The advice from Inka and everydayupsand downs is very important. Don't be scared but given everything else you need to do, be vigilant and don't neglect your health.

They just did the hba1c, no other tests, so maybe that's the plan for my next appointment, I'm not sure. I've lost a stone and a half over the last 6 months with no changes to diet or exercise so it's possible if that's an indicator.

The high HbA1C and weight loss certainly should send up red flags for possible Type 1 so I would ask for the additional tests.

They’ll tell you that you have diabetes, and they really should ask for a urine sample and dip it there and then for ketones. They’ll ask some questions about history and either start you on medication or call the hospital and ask them to see you to start you on medication, depending which type they think it is.

Look up DKA and if you get any symptoms in the meantime go to a&e

You can buy urine dipsticks that test for ketones for around £5 for a tub. Well worth buying if there’s any chance you’re Type 1. Type 1 can occur at any age but adults are sometimes wrongly assumed to be Type 2 when they’re actually Type 1. Keep that in mind and consider getting the ketone test sticks.

This is the information Lucy mentioned above:

I'll take a look for those, thanks

@ScrompinNompin I received them as a prescription when I was put on a SGLT2 which can in rare cases cause ketoacidosis. I was told to test my urine if I felt unwell but haven't opened them yet. I have now discovered they are cheap and don't require a prescription. In your situation I would try and get some tomorrow and test my urine. Although it's usually done because you feel unwell with changing jobs and home you probably cannot judge how unwell you might be because you must be stressed. If test is OK you can relax a little if not try and get to A and E. There are colour variations. I would continue testing until your appointment.

@ScrompinNompin mine are Bayer ketostix. Looks like Amazon have them for just over £7. Other chemist's have them for less. Mine were supplied by Boots.
