I had my 3 month review with my DSN last Thursday and was told I needed medication for my cholesterol. No surprise there. DSN said she would talk to my GP and to collect the prescription this week. Well, I get a phone call yesterday and was told that because of my severe reaction to statins and my existing medical conditions, the latest research had shown that the alternative to statins was contra-indicated for diabetics. I am to continue following my healthy eating plan, as it had lowered my cholesterol a bit, although not to the desired levels. But even more of a surprise was that Metformin was also contra-indicated. Good job that with an HbA1c down to 48, they would not have prescribed it anyway. So it's up to me to stick to the low carb plan for life now. I am actually trying Inulin, with the DSN's knowledge, following a suggestion I read on this Forum. Review of both cholesterol and blood glucose now in 3 months time. I'm glad I'm not on even more medication! 😉

Yes you definitely have the glass half full or half empty situation.
I'm not sure what your 'healthy eating plan' is, but since you are still losing weight, it is quite normal for your Total Cholesterol and indeed your LDL to be higher than it would when you are not burning stored body fat. Because burning up stores body fat means that whatever Cholesterol was stored in those fats cells is re-processed through your bloodstream.

If your 'healthy eating plan' is LCHF then I am surprised that your HDL has not increased since this is normally the case, but I wouldn't stress about the Cholesterol figures until your weight stabilises.

My plan is low carb low fat, as instructed by my GP and dietician, and I have another 34kg to lose, so it's going to be a very long haul - at least another year. But as long as my HbA1c remains below 48 and ideally below 41, that is the major objective. But going back many years when I had a BMI of <25 my cholesterol was actually higher than it is now!

Pity about the lipid meds, but probably yr total chol will continue to come down as you continue to lose weight, and maybe yr HDL will increase also - though personally I find that getting HDL to shift is really tough going.
 
I'd say that was good news, @Felinia - what you're doing is obviously working and getting you towards your targets, and you're on enough meds already!

OK, so the low fat rather than going bold with High Fat may account for your HDL (and probably also Trigylcerides) not improving. But we each have to do what we think is best.
I know it is easier if you don't have to fight your Health care Professionals (at least yours appear OK with Low Carb). If I had continued to follow the advice of mine I would be at least on 1 medication by now, still be in the diabetic HbA1C range and be around 3 stone heavier. But I knew it was crazy to keep following what had already failed over a 10yr period and expect it to suddenly start working for me!

My thoughts exactly!! High blood pressure, Diverticular Disease, Gastritis, Glaucoma (thanks granddad), plus various joint and bone supplements. If you shake me by the throat, I rattle!!
