Hi,
I've not posted here a lot but been lurking for a while and i did post when I was first diagnosed (with lots of helpful replies thanks). Here is my first post and you can see I was really down and anxious about my diagnosis: https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/anxious-newbie-here.97836/#post-1135030
Anyway, this week I've had the amazing news that my hba1c has gone down from 69 to 37 in about 3 1/2 months, and my cholesterol from 6.1 to 5, with no medication for either! I thought I'd post in case it gives anyone hope or inspiration.
I've achieved this through low carb (but not Keto) - about 70-80g of carbs most days and 1200 calories most days. I've lost about a stone and 3/4. Been monitoring my eating on My Fitness pal where possible and also bought a blood sugar monitor to occasionally check how a meal has impacted me to give me a feel for how I'm getting on.
I was initially quite freaked out as a lot I could find from people who had got their hba1c down was about 800 calories, meal replacements and Keto/ cutting out carbs altogether apart from veg. I realise I was lucky and some people may need to do that, but i want to say if you don't think you can go that extreme, it's still worth making the smaller changes!
I still eat some pasta or rice if we are having a meal that involves that, but switched switched brown and only have about 60/ 70g - I find that much more appealing a change than having cauliflower rice or courgetti etc! I've cut out sweet stuff but still let myself have some dark choc most days and a glass of dry wine on weekend evenings (just not half a bottle with a pile of crisps or dairy milk like I would have before!)
I want to lose another half a stone or more to put me in the healthy bmi, and then I need to work out how to keep it up long term, but it feels more doable now than it did. I think focusing on exercise more might be a good next step.
Ironically I finally got info from the dieticians I was referred to in Jan with invitation to an awareness session and log in for mydesmond . Seems a bit late now but maybe they will give me some ideas for keeping it up! I get there would be a wait for a face to face session, but you'd think an online log in could be sent out as soon as you were diagnosed!
