hello everyone, I know I haven't been on in ages ! But I always nip in daily to read what everyone is up to. I have a question regarding average blood sugars.prob seems simple to you all, I just wanted confirmation from people in the know!! My sons averages:
7 days. - 7.8
14 days. - 8.4
30 days. - 7.9
Just wondered if he's on the right track?
Thanks

Hi Carol, nice to hear from you again 🙂 Those averages aren't bad at all, just a little above ideal I would say. A lot will depend on when he is testing of course - if he only tests on waking or pre-meal then ideally they could probably do with lowering a couple of mmol, but if they also include some post-meal testing (which would be expected to be higher generally) then it is less of a problem.

For me it depends on how those averages are made up -

If they are made up of a load of 6s, 7s 8s and 9s constantly then yeh, great you have consistency and now can work on getting that average slowly lower to around 6!

However if the average is made up of a load of swinging readings... Ie 10 readings of 15 and 10 readings of 2.5 will give you an average of 8.75 but the controls not good. However you can get an average of 8.75 by having 20 readings of 8.75 and the control is much better (In this example a little high though)

I just dont think an average gives a great picture without knowing more things like the spread of the results & whether the tests are post or pre meal as northerner says.

Not bad. You prompted me to check mine as well.

Today so far = 5.9
Last 7 days = 5.9
Last 14 days = 5.9

How very unexciting of me. I really hope it stays that way. 😎

Nearly forgot, last 30 days, one guess!

BTW. Northie and Benny have a point, the real picture will depend on what's going on throughout the day. For the last six weeks on the whole, my numbers have stayed between 4.0 and 8.0 and most of the readings on any given day have remained stable, no shooting up and then falling through the floor as they did in the three years before that.

Brilliant results! As Benny says the ideal averages would include a good standard deviation and minimal hypos and hypers, I would much prefer an average of 7 with zero hypos than an average of 5 with lots of hypos.

my latest, based on an average of 8 tests a day:

last 7 days - 6.8
last 14 days - 6.8
last 30 days - 6.6
last 60 days 6.9

Pretty happy with those as not many hypos....less than I've ever had in 17 years of D. 🙂

Last 7 days : -

Overall - 6.9 with SD of 2.7
Pre meal - 6.2 with SD of 1.7
Post meal - 7.6 with SD of 2.9
Bed time - 6.3 with SD of 1.3

54 tests total. However 3 hypo readings (All in 1 day)

I've only got my SDs for 'days' ....I should program my tests better!! but I'm guessing my SDs would be best at 2 hours post prandial and worst pre-meal......must find out!

Thanks everyone, yes I see what you mean about how the averages are made up! It's still awork in progress I think .

I tend to also keep my own spreadsheets too on excel, this breaks it down even further to the different meal times and differnt post meal tests, its then programmed to give total number of results between 4-7, 7 and 9 etc etc, it will give the SDs for all the differnt time slots etc. If anyone wants it up loading to have a go I can, but it is very simple and tailored to me. I wait till i finish a page is my diary which is 18 days I think and then fill it in, so every 18 days I set up a new tab and bang all the info in..

It may be worth getting one of the new flashy metre out there like the expert. This gives you a lot more breakdowns of how averages are made up and you can really identify patterns and where improvments can be made...! Take a look for the roche accu check avviva expert!
