I thought I would introduce myself as I didn't on the other forum. I got my type 2 diagnosis at the beginning of January with an 8.9% hba1c subsequent to a routine blood test before christmas which showed an elevated fasting plasma glucose. Since then I have been on diet and exercise, have lost 19kg and my 8 week hba1c is down to 6.6%. I was tested at 8 weeks rather than 12 because of some concern over my triglyciderides, but these are also down now to 2.0.

I aim to lose another 20kg and double my exercise routine as I get fitter so I should, fingers crossed, maintain the improvement.

Although I am dieting, I eat very well, but prepare most things myself and seek out specialist bakers for example, for some food stuffs.

If only I had done this sooner .....

Hello Yorksman, welcome to the club! Congratulations on your spectacular weight loss. There are quite a few of us well-padded examples of humanity on this forum, so have a browse round the weight loss threads for ideas and inspiration, and feel free to post any questions you have about anything.

Hi yorksman, welcome to the forum 🙂 Wow! You have made some tremendous progress in such a short time, well done! 🙂 What exercise routine are you following? It certainly seems to be working for you. Be careful not to overdo things though!

If you have any questions, please do ask and hopefully there will be someone along to answer you or share their own experiences. I look frward to hearing more from you, and of your continued success 🙂

Welcome to the forum yorksman 🙂

Thanks for the welcome.

I'm not fit enough to overdo any exercise. I am losing the weight by diet. The exercise, which is a rower, is to aid digestion. I do six or seven mins after every meal. I would have normally taken a walk but I have some arthritis in my ankle so rowing is easier. A few mins on the rower is like walking up a moderately steep hill. I'm not going fast, just steady.

I find a few mins exercise also improves insulin sensitivity so if I have porridge for example, my pre and post meal readings are more or less the same. If I don't do any, I'll be 1 to 1.5 points higher. If I have a nap, rather than exercise, I'll be 2 to 2.5 points higher. As far as I know, a number of hormones and ezymes are released which help take up the glucose in the blood. They don't last long but the effect is cumulative. The losing weight bit is almost entirely due to avoiding sugary foods and cutting down a lot on fats. So out now are things like biscuits or buns, sweets or chocolate bars, crisps etc etc. I eat carbs, but all unrefined stuff, brown rice, rye bread, wholegrain pasta and then other grains like barley and then it's just a question of choosing lean meats or cutting the excess fat off any bacon etc. The only real effort required is to avoid snacks, especially whilst watching TV. That's the hardest part of the day. My saving grace is ice cold diet lemonade from the supermarket, zero cal zero carb, but then with the juice of a freshly squeezed lemon in it. That's a shock to the system which makes you forget about food.
