Carol is going to a JLS/Olly Murs concert with friends who don't know anything about diabetes😱 Why did I say yes????
I will write out a guide to hypos for them and mum, where Carol will be staying the night. I'll also tell them that one of them should go with Carol if she needs the toilet.

Does anyone have any good advice about going to concerts? I know she'll be excited. They will have reserved seats, but I still expect they will be jumping about. The concert starts at 18.30 and finishes at about 10. They will arrive at the stadium at about 17.30. Carol will have already had her tea/dinner by then.

Make sure she has pockets in her clothes and / or a small bag so she can keep sweets for emergencies with her at all times.

She'll take her handbag, as she will have to inject her levemir at 9. I'm not sure if I should tell her to leave it until she gets back, but that could be 11pm.

Can't offer any advice, but I hope carol enjoys the concert and has no problems

if she needs somehwere safe to inject she can go to the first aid post (where some of my friends will be) and they should be able to give her some space. if she says she's diabetic and she needs to give an injection, they should just leave her to it!

Tricky call on the Levemir. Not sure I'd want to have to inject in a concert venue. For my money I'd leave the Lev till she got back (even if that were 1am or some unearthly hour). I'm sure I'm not the only one who has forgotten to inject basal one time or other and had to inject half dose the following morning. Not ideal, but no real problem and no long term damage done.

I suggest you explain the options and give her the choice to make

a) inject there, bit of a nuisance but probably better control
b) leave it to you get back and accept that you may have to deal with some fallout/high levels/extra fingersticks the following day

Not sure if she'll be leaping about like a mad thing, but she may well counter any initial rise caused by the delay just by virtue of being stood up and/or dancing all night!

Great!!!🙂 She does inject in her thigh only, so that would be a good place to go. BUT knowing Carol she'll go to the toilets😱.

She has forgotten her Levemir twice and both times with disastrous results. The first time she was really sick in the morning, the second time she realised in the middle of the night (4/5am) and we managed to avoid being too sick.
I won't be available to deal with it all, as she will be sleeping over at her friend's house, which is 30 minute drive away.
But I was thinking that 2 hours shouldn't make any difference - or does it????

If it were me I'd be tempted to delay the levemir until she gets home if you're sure it won't be more than a couple of hours late. I wouldn't want to leave my palce at a concert to go do a jab, and I wouldn't fancy trying to inject in the middle of the scrum.

She may find she goes up a bit because of the adrenalin and excitement but that affects everyone differently.

ALso to beware of buying fizzy drinks at the venue in case of mix ups.

Hope she enjoys it.🙂

Ooooh that's trickier then... Though as you say if it's only 2 hours (or if it's in the car after the concert maybe slightly less than that) then it might be less of an issue. I guess it's still got to be her call since she'll be the one 'on the ground' so to speak. Toilets at a concert?!?? Eeeeeeeeew. No place for an injection. But the First Aid post is a good thought if timing is felt to be the main concern.

Perhaps she should take it with her and make a judgement there?

I'm sure she'll have a fab time and it will make up for all the faffing about she'll have to go though 🙂

Exitement usually makes her go low. She's always hypo on the way to the airport despite the fact we're sitting still for 2 hours.

Thanks for the reminder about the drinks. I'll tell her to buy bottle if available, and if not - test with the diastix.

Actually, injecting in the car didn't occur to me either. Another good idea. Although Carol won't lose her seat, as it is a reserved seat and there are the 4 of them and they don't all have to leave together.

I told Carol about the first aid posts Ellibug mentioned and she said good idea, I'll get my friend to speak up for me. Carol hates talking to strangers.🙄

I think she'll do the injection at 9. Shame she didn't keep the time when we went an hour forward in spring, eventhough I told her to. Then we wouldn't have this issue again.oh well.....

P.S. There are a lot of girls (all girls school) who have dentist and doctor's appointments this afternoon. But quite a lot of girls were honest and said they were going to the concert and therefor wanted the afternoon off.

MMMMM Olly Murs she has good taste, hope she has a good time with no hiccups x

LOL, Steffie, she didn't have much choice in the matter. She was invited by a friend who got 4 tickets for her birthday. She quite likes Olly, but she likes JLS better.

For the matter of injecting - she's decided she'll go to the First Aid Post or inject at her seat through a rip in her jeans.

Poor Fiona! She just got home from the cheerleading class school has organised. She said she was the only year 6 child there. As this was the second session, I asked whether the others didn't like the class then. She answered that they are all going to see JLS!!

Update

Well, Carol got home safe and well!
She injected at 9pm, but she lost her strips, so she didn't test before tea/dinner. She tested at 11pm (with the strips from the spare meter, which I made her take to her friend's house) and was around 15, later she didn't feel well, so she tested and it was 12, but I doubt she did anything about it. She was 15 earlier today. She came home at about 3.30pm and went straight to bed, as apparently they stayed up till 4am and were awake again at 8am😱. I woke her at 6.30pm to have some food. She then decided to go out. And as it is now 9.20ish, she's very late home and in trouble!!!!!😡

Sounds like she had a great time, and while those BGs aren't perfect I guess they are fine for a once on a blue moon event. At least she stayed out of the 20's!
