Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I was diagnosed 13 yrs ago, and was put on to Levimir and Novorapid. In the early years i seemed to do ok. I was discharged from the Hospital and put under the care of my GPs with their Diabetes nurse. To be honest they pretty much left me to it. I became lazy and didnt constantly monitor but just when i felt c**p. So i made an appt with drs (this was about 18 months ago). I was suffering from extreme high levels, more so in the afternoons, barely lower than 18, sometimes in the early 20s. So, it went to constant testing. The nurse told me i was doing certain things wrong and had my ratios all wrong. She lowered my Levimir from 12units right down to 8, and then my Novorapid ratio went from 1 unit per 10gms of Carbs to 1.5 in the morning to 2 the rest of the day. This was scary times for me as i was going from taking 6 - 8 units with my lunch to up to 16!!

Anyway this worked for a while, but still too much ups and downs and started having hypos. So i plagued my drs to get me back at the hospital. Which now i am. They have changed my long lasting insulin (begins with T??) and i am taking only 7 units. And my novorapid has gone back to 1 unit per 10gms. I also have one of these amazing meters that tells you how much insuling to take depending on the pre programmed information and also what you tell it. Again, it was ok to start with, but i seem to be having highs again. And i just dont get it. Today, before lunch, 15.6, but i followed the instructions with breakfast.

Question: How much effect does Milk and Sweetex have on your levels?

Hi Lucy Warm welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear your having problems. Milk does have some carbs in it , off the top of my head I can't recall how many, I think the sweetener should be ok.
I have a couple of thoughts.

Could your insulin have been compromised, possibly before you received it or like I did once kept my pens in my handbag which was hanging on the back of a chair in full hot sunshine for a few days😱.

Is it possible you're going down with some infection or other.

Maybe your ratios have changed , unfortunately just like the weather as you already know D is so darn fickle .
Maybe you need to do a basal test.
I think it would be a good idea email or call your hospital team too.

Others more experience than I will be along soon.

Hello, Lucy, and welcome. My levels and insulin needs have been all over the place for the last few days because of the very hot weather. If it's hot where you are, that could be affecting levels ( I've noticed from what people have been saying on here generally, that some people have had to reduce insulin drastically, and some, like me, have had to firefight with increased bolus insulin) I think my liver is trying to be helpful and chucking out some extra glucose because it thinks my body is stressed and needs some more! You may find it all settles down again when the weather breaks.

Welcome to the forum, Lucy Baxter.
Can you look at your long acting insulin pen to check its name? Tresiba?
Can you get advice from your hospital clinic? They will know the details of your medication, even if you don't.
What else is important in your life? Family, friends, sports, activities, hobbies, travel, jobs etc?
