The University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital now has iPro continuous glucose monitoring devices available for cats and dogs with diabetes mellitus. The devices, commonly used for human patients with diabetes, are used to gather data on the patient?s response to insulin.

?We wanted the best possible care for our diabetic patients, and since continuous glucose monitors are the standard of care in human medicine, we knew we had to introduce it here at the University of Georgia,? said Cynthia Ward, a professor of small animal internal medicine in the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine. ?Very few places in the United States offer the monitors for animal health care.?

That did make me laugh :D

CGMS is the gold standard, for those with comprehensive medical insurance cover or deep pockets. I do love animals, but it's a sad state of affairs when animals with rich owners in the USA get CGMS and yet there are people in developing countries who can't even access a regular supply of insulin.

Agree with Redkite's analysis of needs of people / animals with diabetes - some priorities in this world are distinctly skewed!
