Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, been using a Glucomen aero meter to control my BG, I have another that I take out with me, both read totally different readings, one reads a lot less than the other totally in-consistent.
Had three hypo's in a week these are new meters from my surgery, my old meter which I used for three years was a Freestyle libra didn't have a problem, the surgery do not issue this meter anymore or the testing strips, its all Glucomen Aero. I am buying the strips for my old freestyle meter has anyone had the same problem with these meters?.
Or can anyone tell me what are the best BG meters on the market at giving the correct reading?.

You need to complain to your surgery - tell them you aren't getting consistent readings and that it.they have caused you to have hypos you weren't expecting and because you HAVE take insulin to stay alive that you find the meters unacceptable and ask them what they are going to do about it.

They cannot refuse to prescribe the meters and strips we actually need - I could not operate my pump without its matching meter and that being the case the same CCG would have wasted thousands of pounds providing it!

Thank you, am going tomorrow for a blood test, will do what you have suggested but with my surgery the Doctor says he knows nothing about Diabetes and everyone else tells me to see the Diabetes nurse who is hardly ever there.

Do you also see the hospital? If not - which medical expert is responsible for looking after you and your diabetes?

I think the FreeStyle Optium test strips are £15 for 50 (the prices were for the NHS for a few years ago, so may not be exactly right now) and most others are more like £10. Maybe your local CCG have a special deal for these particular meters and test strips. As others say, if they're not working right, that's obviously a problem and you're right to complain. We all need a meter that we trust (though we probably shouldn't trust their accuracy as much as I suspect most of us do).

I normally have an appointment every year to go to the hospital to see a doctor, but this year it has gone about sixteen months since I have seen someone, but an appointment has just come through for August, went to bed last night at 12.5 woke up with 3.2 in hypo don't know why, don't know whether I am eating enough in the day or what I have lost confidence in every thing I am doing at the moment.

what basal are you on? it's possible that with the change in weather etc your basal needs are changing so maybe try doing a basal test?
xx

Just because one sample of a manufacturer's meter did not work does not mean that all their meters are no good. Why not return that meter as defective and get a new one?

  1. Just picked up on this (sorry), I use a GlucoMen areo and have done for two years. When I registered my meter, www.glucomen.co.uk, 0800 243667 They offered me a new meter that would check ketones also F.O.C, received it the next day, complete with 50 test strips and a dozen ketone strips. I also have an ACCU-CHEK mobile* and the difference between all three is less than 10%. Sorry you seem to be having trouble with your GlucoMen but if you call them and state your concerns, I`m sure they will be able to help you. Please make sure your meter is registered and you can do this at the point of contact, hope this helps my friend.
