i hope I’ve spelt that right! Ok, having real problems with Metformin still - felt ok this morning after a bad Saturday and a rough Sunday, so took it this morning as usual. Did all my usual stuff and then had lunch, then a twitch and Montezumas revenge! Completely out of the blue. I rang the helpline and talked it through as I know I’ve only been on it a relatively short while but I really can’t live not knowing what is going to happen. He said there are alternatives and mentioned Gluciazide (?) so I wondered what others have found while on this. Are there any similar side effects? Want to be prepared for when my nurse calls me at the end of the week and see if we can mutually agree a change. Thanks.

Hi Flakie. O dear it Sounds like you are having a real bad time with Metfartin.
It’s best to contact the person who prescribed it ASAP. Their is a slow release version that some tolerate better.
Do you take it directly before or directly after eating as that is supposed to help prevent tum problems.
I was on Gliclazide in the past and had no issues with it, though it can cause hypo’s and they must provide you with a meter and test strips.

Hi Lin
I should have gone into a bit more detail so sorry! I’m on the SR one already and bought myself the test meter etc so have been testing. I was only diagnosed three weeks ago but have been learning ever since! I take it midway through breakfast and dinner so these side effects are not good. I don’t know how anyone can live normally when there’s a chance of this happening and I know I’m probably being a bit defeatist but I’m so stressed out with it I feel I can’t move on and get my head round all the other changes I need to make. I’ve seen a reduction in my test results I think but don’t have enough yet to be sure, but I have changed my diet quite a lot. I have an adult son with learning disabilities at home and I’m his main carer so that’s one problem as it’s hard enough to access loos when I’m with him normally! He doesn’t like disabled loos and it’s not really appropriate to go in one with anyway especially if I have this problem! I know I sound a bit wishy washy about it all and that’s not me normally but I feel like I’m out of control. Sorry, I’ve ranted a bit but I just had to get that off my chest. Thanks.

It’s not wishy washy at all and your fully entitled to have a rant because you’re really suffering.
You can’t be doing with this any longer.
The best thing you can do is contact your gp/nurse as soon as possible, and tell them what’s happening in no uncertain terms, be as graphic as you like. Their are other meds that may suit you far better.
For Some of them they must provide you with a meter and test strips.

I’m not sure about the slow release version but the ordinary one is best taken immediately before, during or directly after eating a meal. So it may be worth trying that with the SL one.

I suffered with the side effects of Metformin and Atorvastatin for five weeks - then I gave up and stopped taking them.
Life was just not worth living.
I was really put out that the doctor had not given any warning about the side effects, and even more ticked off to find out that they had no benefit. After I stopped the tablets my blood glucose continued to decrease and now I have normal levels just by eating low carb foods.

Hi, I am on Gliclizide (as well as metformin and empagliflozin) I am one of the lucky ones and don't get the undesirable side effects of metformin. As mentioned Gliclizide can cause hypos and it can also cause weight gain (unfortunately). I haven't had any adverse side effects from taking it.
