Hi My diabetes has been controlled with 1 slow release Metformin and diet for several years However recently my sugar levels have started to go really high and my diabetic nurse would like me to start Gliclazide . I am really worried about this as I live alone and worry my sugar levels will drop too low. Is anyone else on this medication ? and if so how effective and safe is it please > Im really worried Thank you

Hi and welcome to the forum. I am taking gliclizide and have only had 1 hypo (3.6) whilst on it. I don't live alone though.

Welcome to the forum, Dalaney.
When you start taking a medication that acts to reduce blood glucose, such as glicazide, you should also be provided with a blood glucose meter and strips, so you can test yourself. You should also have emergency sweets around the house and in pockets when outside.
However, to give an example of low risks of hypos - I've been using insulin for over 20 years, including over 4 years living alone, plus many periods of solo travelling in UK and overseas, and I've never had a hypo that wasn't solved by me alone. I have never needed help from anyone.
The key thing is to ask your diabete specialist nurse to provide meter and prescribe strips. Plus understand DVLA recommendations, if you drive.
Also, remember that exercise is as important as diet in controlling diabetes, as well as medication.

Hi Dalaney

Like Stitch147, I've been taking glicazide since my diagnosis at the lowest dose, and have had one hypo so far (3.7). I can put it down to being out shopping all day and not eating lunch until much later than normal. You should have a testing kit if you're on glicazide so you can test yourself and check your levels, and I guess I'd recommend making sure you've got the right hypo-combatting snacks around the house just in case you need them.
