Gliclazide v Insulin

Hi Everyone,

First post, so please bare with me.

I'm T2 for around 12 years and around 12 months ago I went onto 6 units of slow release insulin along with Metform and 80mg Gliclazide.

My diabetes has been very well controlled.

Around a month ago my Diabetic nurse suggested I ditch the gliclazide.

Almost immediately my blood sugars began to spike from an average of 7 to over 11.

On review, it was decided I up the units to 8, this was over a week ago, but still I have spikes and had one reading under 10 in over a week.

Ive a telephone appointment tomorrow, has anyone else has similar issues coming off Gliclazide?

Apologies for the essay.

Many thanks.

Welcome to the forum
It may be the gliclazide was doing the job of inducing your pancreas to produce more insulin to deal with the carbs in your meals which slow release insulin is not designed to do, it is managing the release of glucose from the liver over approx a 24 hour period depending on which insulin it is./**
You could ask at your appointment about having a fast acting insulin to deal with carbohydrates in your meals.

Or you could ask to go back on the gliclazide if you were happy with that. Perhaps more gliclazide would mean being able to come off the insulin as you aren’t on much.
