I am currently on 40mg tablets twice a day i have cut out a lot of my old bad diet and snacking but on the new lower carb diet im now putting weight on is this more down to my body getting used to the new things or is it the tablets. im now starting to bring my bs levels down a lot so wondered if it was worth asking my d nurse if i could come of the tablets for a few months and try controlling my t2 diabetes more with diet.

I am also on gliclazide. My DN told me they don't prescribe it so often now as it can make you gain weight. As that is not an issue for me, I am getting the main benefit of it helping to get my BG levels down. Keep an eye on your carbs as you run the risk of hypos.

Hi im looking at going on the low carb lifesytle and looking to lose weight also go going to speak to my dn to see if i can come of them next week and start on my low carb journey to keep my diabetes under control. thank you for your advice.

I was previously on Glicazide (I’m thinking that must’ve been about 20 years ago)
at a time when my health care team were fighting to get both my BMI & Hba1c down (from back then my BMI was over 40 & Hba1c over100)
I remember a nurse (she wasn’t a DSN) suggested to a GP we remove the Glicazide and up Metformin,
and I remember they, put me on some horrible weight loss tablets (that I’m sure are no longer prescribed or recommended) back then im certain there was no mention of going on a reduced carb diet
so yes there are alternatives, and when you say your bringing your levels down @mark1985 under a lower carb diet hopefully that’s good news :party:

Glic gets your pancreas to squirt out more insulin. So I guess it’s theoretically possible that you now have the means to absorb energy from food which would previously have stayed stuck in your blood stream causing havoc?

Hopefully adjusting your portion sizes and your switch to a lower carb way of eating a little might help?

Thank you for the info my dsn did not actually tell me what glicazide actually did just put me on them. i am adjusting my diet slowly over to a low carb diet over the next month but taken big steps to kick start this mainly cutting out fizzy snacks and bread a lot and eating more low carb and moving away from most food that is processed. my BG levels are slowly dropping started at 13 and higher now trying to keep them between 7 and 11 max as a good point to gain control before i go further with low carb food and add more exercise into my routine. will 130g of carbs be enough to keep going on the glicazide or should i talk to my nurse at my appointment next week?

Do keep your nurse updated with the changes you are making. Because of gliclazide’s action it does rely on there being a certain level of carb intake, so be a little cautious if you are reducing carbs, and keep a close eye on BGs, so that you don’t risk hypoglycaemia.

I think talking to your nurse sounds like a good plan.
 
I am prescribe gliclazide 80mg (twice a day) and metformin 1000mg (once a day), but I can’t seem to lose any weight (112kg/17.6 st) approx. I have read that one of Metformin side effects is weight gain/bloating. Anyone else on this regime suffering similar effects? No matter how much I diet nothing seems to work. Any advice to shed a few pounds besides the obvious one of chopping the old nogging off.

It is not usually a side effects to gain weight as people tend to reduce their carb intake and that will aid with weight loss. Bloating can be a side effect. However with gliclazide it is a balance of not having too few carbs for the gliclazide dose and risking low blood glucose and not having too many so the medication is fighting with the amount of carbs. Many find that the suggested no more than 130g per day is OK with those medications but you will need to check if that is suitable for you by testing with your home blood glucose monitor.

Can you give us an idea of a couple of days meals drinks and snacks? Ignore any food consumed over Christmas if you don't normally eat it. People can hopefully give you advice to help with the weight loss. I am on the same medication but a slightly higher dose. As my goal is the opposite to yours I can't pass on any personal experience of dieting with diabetes and medication.
 
Sorry for delay, my meal regime normally consists of the folloing: Breakfast Granola or Fruit & Fibre - 3 spoons or 1 weetabix. I try not to eat until lunchtime, the a sandwich brown bread/wholemeal with ham/cheese or tuna, or maybe egg. Dinner: grilled chicken, or curry or a small steak with brown rice or a small baked potato.
I try not to snack between meals. Drinks: I have black coffee in the morning, the rest of the day I drink about 1.5 litres of water. Occasionally I might have a diet coke.
At present I seem to be in a hyper stage - high glucose (18.2 - 21 mmol/L)
Exercise consists of trying to get 10,000 steps each day.

I try not to eat until lunchtime, the a sandwich brown bread/wholemeal with ham/cheese or tuna, or maybe egg. Dinner: grilled chicken, or curry or a small steak with brown rice or a small baked potato.
I try not to snack between meals. Drinks: I have black coffee in the morning, the rest of the day I drink about 1.5 litres of water. Occasionally I might have a diet coke.
At present I seem to be in a hyper stage - high glucose (18.2 - 21 mmol/L)
Exercise consists of trying to get 10,000 steps each day.
With those high glucose levels it sounds as if the medications are not helping you cope with the amount of carbohydrates you are having, some quite high carb foods but just how much will depend on your portion size.
When are you testing to record those levels.
When do you take your gliclazide, I believe it suggests taking 30mins before eating to give it chance to work before being hit with carbs.
Trying some strategic testing of before eating and after 2 hours will perhaps give you a clue as to whether you cope with the carbs in that meal, you want the increase to be no more than 2-3mmol/l.
Do you have some urine ketone test strips as with such high glucose you should keep an eye out for elevated ketones.

You don't mention any fruit or veg. Are you not keen on them? If you do snack, what food do you have? As @Leadinglights suggested, testing before and after meals would identify the carbs pushing up your blood glucose.

When I started taking Gliclazide and used finger prick testing to monitor blood glucose I was seeing readings like yours and my HbA1c was still well over 100 mmol/mol. Since reducing my carbs to 130 to 150g per day and increasing Gliclazide it is now less than half that level.
