Hi all, haven't been on here for a while. Has anyone had gastric problems while taking the above medication twice a day. My DN recently increased my glicazide to 320 mg a day plus 2000 mg of Metformin which I have taken for years. I am suffering badly from gastric problems. I need to lose weight but the antidepressants I have to take make it impossible. My last Hba1c three weeks ago was 76!!!! up from the 54 I have been for years. I know about low carb diet and I follow it. DN said I might be better off on insulin. This scared the life out of me and I feel such a failure. I can't stop crying

Update, just read the leaflet in Gliclazide packet and discovered they contain lactose! I am lactose intolerant!!!!

Has the problem only been with your increased dose if so then report that to your GP. It could be you were fine as the lower dose didn't contain enough lactose to affect you.
There may be an alternative medication.

Hi @snowball12 sorry to learn you are getting side effects from the gliclazide but glad you have likely identified lactose as the possible culprit.
I am on the same medication as you but at my last review in Feb I was offered either to increase gliclazide to 320mg per day or to take dapagliflozin as well as metformin & gliclazide.
As I was tolerating gliclazide well I opted to increase the dose and I have been fine with the increase. Nevertheless I would like to be able to reduce it in the future when ny hba1c result is under 50.
There are other medication options available in addition to insulin. Hopefully your HCP will prescribe something that suits you better.

Hi, silver minion. Thanks for your reply. I have just seen my DN and we agreed that I have now exhausted every medication except metformin. I have reacted badly to everyone. She has referred me to the Diabetes consultant at the hospital. I have to continue with Metformin and diet only until then. The Gliclazide was not working even at the lower dose. I am relieved in a way but scared too. Hope I don't have to wait to long

Are there any Type 2's on Insulin on here. I would like to know what's coming? Thanks
There are several type 2's on insulin. I am sure someone will be along to share their experience of managing their diabetes with insulin. Try not to get anxious about it.

Mixed or basal would be usual place to start if starting on insulin as a t2.

Are you sure you’ve tried every single medication though? There’s loads of them.

Have you also tried taking lactase to see if that means you can tolerate the gliclazide?

I was started on Insulin when diagnosed almost 2 years ago my Hba1c was 87, I only have Basel insulin, I have had no issues at all, my Hba1c is now 39. To be honest I prefer insulin control and wouldn't want oral meds that's just my preference. I hope you don't have to long to wait.

Yes I am sure I have tried every medication. My Hba1c two weeks ago was 76 previously 60. 15 years as a diabetic and totally worn out.

Thank you so much for your reply. Means a lot

I am T2 on insulin and metformin. I took metformin alone for 14 years but eventually it wasn't enough by itself. I didn't want to take any of the other diabetes meds and asked to go on insulin, I started it last November and it has made a massive difference to my blood levels. I also feel more energetic.
For me it was the right choice and it's certainly nothing to be scared of, the needle is tiny and you hardly feel anything when you inject.

Does the lactase help by meaning you can take more gliclazide?
