THE population of Glasgow has grown to almost 600,000, despite fewer births and more deaths.

The latest report of births, deaths and marriages showed Scotland's largest city has 598,830 people, up 6000 on the year before.

Births dropped by almost 100 to 7543 and there was an increase in deaths of a similar number, from 6403 to 6499.

Scotland's population also increased by more than 20,000, from 5,222,200 to 5,254,800, also showing fewer births and more deaths.

Glasgow's growth was slower than Edinburgh, which saw an increase of just over 9000, a rate of 1.9% while in Glasgow it was 1%.
