Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed with type 2 in 2001
It was a bad time as my wife,at time, was type 1 and I didn't know how I would cope with hypo if they occurred as it was an experience I endured with great difficulty
I spent many hours with my GP who was fabulous and after many appointments and discussions (he always gave me time, last appointment of the day for an hour or more)
Unfortunately he's no longer with us
He introduced me to the GL diet by Nigel Denby and it is a book well worth the time to read and I have adapted my food to his recommendation
In November last year my 6 monthly blood tests reported that I was now "glucose intorerant" sugars at 5.5 and cholesterol at 3.6
I see no advantage in investing in the notion that 5 and 2 and 8 weeks plan from Michael Moseley and be "cured"
Nobody ever promotes the GL and I don't know why
Please look it up and see (my first hit in the book was that mashed potatoes were very high) and loved mashed potatoes

Hi Jonboy, welcome to the forum 🙂 We often suggest following a GL diet here, great to see that it has worked well for you! 🙂 The Michael Mosely 'quick fix' diets can be beneficial, but only if people are prepared to then make a longer-term commitment to their diet and follow something like the GL diet - they are not a 'cure', but something that may help kick start some people to appreciate the advantages and possibilities of managing their diabetes better 🙂

Hi and welcome Jonboy - having an understanding of how certain foods affect the body is paramount to controlling diabetes. Glad it all went well for you.

Ive never read that particular book, but I think about the general principles of GL every time I eat! As a type 1, I certainly find it helps iron out spikes in my blood sugars

I assumed until my GP recommended the book that so long as my sugars were ok then everything was ok

The realisation that GL of the food influenced my diet and sugars that I got control of my diabetes
I have not taken my blood readings for 8/9 years which has been a bonus of the book and my GP
I disliked vegetables of any kind 10/15 yrars ago but now have found recipes from the book that give me pleasure

Please read it

Hi and welcome to forum

Hi Carolg
It's always funny when someone says "you can't have chocolate" and say yes I can but better as a treat at night before bed
Bu

I have 2 squares of 85% choc every night before bed. Suits me fine.:D

Thank you everyone very encouraging to see your responses
MI in 1990 and cholesterol 3.4 currently 3.6 average blood sugars 4.7
Sometime I could "murder" a few pints but know the consequences
They say "diabetics can't have" and I say "oh yes we can but chocolate at bed time "
The latest fad is SIRT foods and that include dark choc and red wine
I've probably never been fitted and healthier
In some respects I'm pleased my diabetes came along !!!!
