I have just started on metaformin and am experiencing the expected side effects - nausea etc
How long does it normally take for this to settle down?

It can take a few weeks, you should be starting on a low dose which would be increased gradually over a few weeks if needed.
Taking mid meal can often help. If it does not settle down you should ask for the slow release version and if that still doesn't suit then an alternative medication.
Were you told what your HbA1C is as that will indicate how much work you need to do.
Also it is also important to make dietary changes as metformin will only help the body use the insulin it produces more effectively, it does not magic away the carbohydrates in the food you eat so reducing your intake of high carb foods is an important part of managing to reduce blood glucose. No good taking medication and still eating too many carbs.

Hope any stomach grumblings settle soon for you @Beancounter298
