Britain should increase NHS spending and follow the Germans who pay out £900 more per head, health service leaders say.
Chris Hopson, chief executive of NHS Providers, called for a cash injection to get the the health service out of “the red zone” - warning it was heading back to the poor performance of the 90s.
Speaking at the organisation’s conference in Birmingham, Mr Hopson described the effects of the NHS being in the middle of the "longest and deepest" financial squeeze in its history.
He pointed out that the NHS in England missed all four major targets - the four-hour A&E standard, the 18-week elective surgery waiting time standard, the expectation that cancer patients will begin treatment within 62 days and the ambulance response time target.
