The Prime Minister has clashed with RCGP chair Dr Clare Gerada after claiming in the House of Commons that the college was fully behind the Government's proposed reforms to the NHS. The remarkable claim, made as MPs prepare to vote on the health bill and coming just two days after the RCGP warning the legislation could 'destablise the NHS', prompted immediate rebuttals from Dr Gerada and other medical colleges.

Apparently the bill still faces a lot of opposition when it goes through to the House of Lords next month.

One can only hope they manage to block it before the damage is done.

They were saying on the radio this morning that there were 1,000 amendments to the bill and only 2 days to discuss them - an impossibility. And if it was such a good idea in the first place, why on earth have 1,000 amendments been proposed? The thing is, some of the changes have already been made or are in the process of being made because the original deadline was so tight. I daresay reforms are needed, but this is clearly too much, too quickly :(

The HEalth Secretary apparently said something about it not mattering who provides healthcare, as long as it's free at the point of use.

Basically, they want the cheapest bidder to run it and cost comes before quality.

Sadly, it's not just an efficiency drive but a means of breaking up the NHS itself. I suspect many see it as a remnant of old socialism. They'll be with BUPA or Harley Street of course and won't ever have seen inside a GPs or hospital. But we're only plebs and shoudl be grateful for a headache tablet. I'd better stop before I get negative about it ! :D
