YOUNG people are increasingly shunning alcohol, with nearly one in three not touching a drop.

Researchers found young people in England aren’t just drinking less alcohol, more are never taking up drinking at all.

The trend is so widespread that being teetotal is gaining wider social acceptance to the extent it is becoming ‘mainstream’, according to University College London researchers.

I heard this being discussed on one of the paper reviews and the reviewer suggested because they take drugs instead.

Well, if they smoke cannabis instead where’s the harm. I don’t believe that idea anyway.

It looks from the tone of the article, that young people are generally becoming more sober generally. Implicit in that is the use of recreational drugs, which is showing signs of a decrease in use by younger people. The use of cocaine, for example, is now mainly the preserve of the moneyed classes.

In the town I live, along with the town I grew up (which is next door), it's still very much a getting falling down drunk and waking up any saying "What did I do?" culture.
I'd stopped going out several years ago cause I don't like that sort of thing. Having started going out again, in the big city (3 years ago last month), attitudes on all sorts of things are so different with younger people. (For the better 🙂)
Meanwhile, my home town is the same as 40 years ago :(
