Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Over the last 6months I have been living with the issue of diabetes finally getting official it last week. I have been working on my diet and starting to see the effects in a new light I'm not so sluggish in the afternoon and losing a little of weight which is handy in time for my holibobs. At the moment my doctor says to control it with diet only and bloods will be taken in 3 months. However I'm not sure how I feel about this as I wasn't in floods of tears or shock, is this right? I asked about a blood glucose monitor but not getting one from the doc - is this worth it and if so which one to get? As for diet I'm working with a blood sugar book but really don't have the inclination to cook in the morning as I have about 45 mins from bed to door. Any ideas would be grateful. 🙂

Welcome to the forum JennB.
What changes have you made to your diet and what are you eating now? Usually, doctors recommend diet AND exercise, so what sort of activity are you doing?
Most people with type 2 diabetes report that a meter is helpful for discovering how various foods / meals and exercise afffect your blood glucose levels. Code Free meter is usually considered the best value meter, as strips are cheapest.
I expect there will be more replies in the morning.

Hi JennB, Welcome. I'm sorry that you needed to find us but glad you joined this forum. You will get lot of helpful advise from people who live with diabetes daily, not just know about it say from a book or studies.

How did you come to be diagnosed ?

You'll find that we can be very different in what works for us
We all react differently when given a diagnosis or bad news, could be you're more of a pragmatist or perhaps a little numb atm , that does pass in time.
I didn't dissolve into tears or shock either and I had absolutely no symptoms, I was diagnosed by accident really.

@Copepod is right in all she said. We recommend self testing so we can find out which foods our bodies can and can't tolerate because we are all different in this and normally the standard advise given simply doesn't work for most of us especially that awful eatwell guide.

As already said Many T2s on here use the Codefree meter . The testing strips are around £7 for 50 where high street brands cost £15 to £30. When initially you're testing just before and two hours after meals, the price is important
It's only available online.
From this site you need to tick that your entitled to VAT relief (you are) and if in the uk tick for the mmol/l measurement .
http://homehealth-uk.com/all-products/codefree-blood-glucose-monitoring-system-mmoll-or-mgdl/
Or Amazon where they do all that for you, well they did last time I looked.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B073WHN...fm-21&linkId=cb802524a5a272370a22a66f9d54406e

You will need to order more test strips and lancets as they only give 10 of each in starter packs.

Have a read 'Test review adjust ' by Alan S

Oops I have gone on a lot haven't I 🙂.
Feel free to ask questions we'll do our best to help.

Hello and welcome to the forum JennB. 🙂

At least you know you've got diabetes and have accepted it. I blanked it for ages which was ridiculous. With the help of the info on here you'll soon have management of this chronic condition down pat. If I'm in a hurry to leave in the morning I just have a carton of cottage cheese.

Good afternoon! I find batch cooking is a very good option and quite easy to carb count from a type 1 point of view! I guess it depends on how many of you you are cooking for? My self and my partners batches last anything from 3 days to a week. Gets a bit boring sometimes but control is normally spot on
Hope you work it out
