The world may be in a dark place right now, but science is providing plenty of light to fight off the shadows. Take the case of two babies that have just been rescued from previously incurable forms of leukemia – thanks to gene-editing therapy, their lives will no longer be cut short.

Writing in the journal Science Translational Medicine, a European team of researchers report that two girls have remained cancer-free 18 and 12 months after being given a novel treatment. In this case, it involved genetically engineering white blood cells to give them the ability to effectively target cancerous cells.

The team’s paper notes that “molecular remissions were achieved within 28 days in both infants,” an incredibly short space of time. At present, the two younglings have shown no signs of the acute lymphocytic leukemia they were once riddled with.

Wow. This is not just a step forward, it's a giant leap. This will transform therapy. Wonder if it will work on grown ups with similar problems like poor Amigo?

I have to hope so Mike and I keep up to date on developing therapies. A miracle cure is announced every other month it seems (bit like with Diabetes) but this kind of therapy is many years away yet. Stem cell transplants for instance still kill slightly more than they cure for my kind of blood cancer.
The new generation of non chemo drugs are showing great hope but NICE won't approve them for first therapy here. You have to have and fail chemo first in the UK due to cost! 🙄

Same old story, Amigo. You just stick around till the wind changes. x
