Taking toys and tech along on holidays and trips offer our youngest family members more than just functionality. A recent unplanned trip into our local children's hospital for my youngest son made this evidently clear for me.

We are fortunate to not have recently taken advantage of the NHS for medical care (and even more fortunate to live in a country with this provision) and I was intrigued by the screens by every bed. Firstly they offered my son some much needed familiarity in a strange institution. Finding his favourite Cbeebies and CBBC shows made him visibly settle down and relax in a strange bed.

He also took along a couple of Skylanders (Bouncer and Eyebrawl to be precise). I had asked his brother, who was doing the packing, if he wouldn't prefer something that didn't need his Xbox to work. He was resolute that this was the ideal toy to take.
