Invasive surgery that could save the life of Britain?s fattest teenager is not being recommended to morbidly obese patients in Wales because of cost fears, a leading consultant has claimed.

Giant teen Georgia Davis, who weighs 56 stone, is still in hospital being treated for diabetes, kidney disease, spinal problems and respiratory failure after a multi-agency operation to remove the front of her house to take her in for treatment.

Dr Nadim Haboubi, chairman of the National Obesity Forum for Wales, claimed obese patients like Georgia should be recommended treatments like gastric bands ? which shrinks the size of a patient?s stomach ? but were not because the NHS was worried about the cost.

The consultant physician runs Wales? only NHS weight management clinic in Cardiff and said thousands were qualified for bariatric treatments ? which includes gastric bands ? but were not receiving it.
