Full fat coke...grr

Despite, as always, asking very clearly for diet coke I've just been served and drunk a pint of full fat coke (one of those instances when you're really thirsty and down the whole thing in less than 5 mins). I noticed afterwards that the rim of the glass was sticky, so I tested it and yep it's full fat coke.

Took it to the barman who tried to give me half a pint of diet to replace it - so I politely but firmly asked for a full pint as that was what I had paid for! He asked me how I knew it was full fat so I explained that I could test with my BG meter which detects glucose. He apologised and all, but still.

It makes me so cross. I know it isn't unusual but it makes me so frustrated! Presumably I am going to go high now (but I have eaten - so I'm hoping that will slow the glucose release down) - but if I bolus for it, the peak of the insulin will obviously completely miss the peak of the coke. So I'm just going to keep testing and give corrections where needed.

It's not much to ask for, and I hate that people don't take you seriously when you try to explain that drinking it without knowing could see you end up in hospital. GR!

Oh what a pain I remember you writing a post similier not long ago Shiv as well, seems that the bartenders seem to think its not serious 1 bit but they would not be saying that if they witnessed you having a hypo and the coke was to blame.The other week when I was out my mate she went to the bar as it was her round and asked for 1 diet coke and a bottle of bulmers,came back and it was in one of those small glass bottles which is always a good idea cause at least then I knew what it was directly.

I hope your BS are not to effected by this.x

So annoying :(

I'm pretty sure I was victim of busy bar staff a few weeks back.

Note to self: I much get hold of a pot of diastix!
 
NRB, I discovered a while ago that my machine (Contour USB) reads 0.6mmol/l or under if I dip it in diet coke, and gives me a number if it's full fat - so this tested at 5.6, and I just checked my diet which came out as predicted as 0.6mmol/l or under!

I will be getting some diastix, what's the easiest place to get hold of them?
 
Diastix are available from many chemists, but I get mine from Amazon and I belive others use e bay or a variety of on line pharmacies.

When given full fat coke I get it changed. If there is any reluctance I ask to see the manager, if there is still reluctance I ask loudly for my money back and complain to head office. One day I accused the stuff in a well known burger chain of trying to kill me, it had been a long day and I was knackered and a little grumpy. Needless to sy it got results, free drinks all round and free meals all round...

NRB, I think you can get them on script but they are also easy to buy over the counter for a couple of quid 🙂 which is much cheaper than me going to my Dr in Brighton to ask for some!

I bought mine from Lloyds Pharmacy for ?4.99

They have come in handy a few times!
 
I have had this happen twice recently Shiv and yes it is frustrating - even more frustrating when the vendor gets defensive and hufty when you try to tell them how important it is... at my club one of the barstaff was overheard saying 'on one occasion she tells us it has to be diet, and now she has normal - hmmm' ..until other half explained the only reason I was now having normal was because I was hypo - aaargh!

I don't think it helps that we now have the pumps rather than bottles and normal and diet are right next to each other - I watch like a hawk to see which one is pressed but its not always easy!
 
if they take the huff get the manager on to them...........you are paying money for them to provide a product, if its not right they should be happy to replace.......

I say this and it hasn't actually happened to me.......:D...........I am actually one of those folk who doesn't complain about anything..........:(
 
This is one of the reasons why I never order coke from a pump, it is so annoying and damn right lazy of the bar staff concerned.

And as we know, the pump isn't always connected to the right type - sometimes as a 'joke' 🙄😡😱
 
It is annoying perhaps we need to see if any diabetic friendly MPs would be willing to but something in place legally. Maybe even might be good to a approach the Portman Group (a group that represents pubs etc) and explain the problem and see if they can change this idea it's a joke. The second someone sues a pub for going DKA it will not be a joke. But then you would have to drink a lot of coke to do that.

Two comments to the above discussion, firstly (bear in mind I am only a parent) I have wondered if it would be a damn good thing for one of the soaps to run a T1 storyline, and secondly, our own personal story was of not being able to get a diet drink in a Chinese! We were out for a family celebration only 3 months after my son's diagnosis. We asked for Diet Coke. We saw the bar tender pick up full fat Coke. We said No, explained it had to be diet as our son was diabetic. He said they didn't have it. We asked what diet drinks they did have. He offered tonic water - NOT slimline!! We pointed out that was no good. We then asked what other options. They had none. We said we would pop out for some Diet Coke. They said No, the manager won't like that. We asked to see the manager. He was just as clueless. In the end my brother-in-law kicked up a right stink and in the end one of their waiters did pop out to Tesco almost next door for the Diet Coke. Grrrr!

Not necessarily! Imagine if you were running high already, and drank it and didn't realise. You could go very high very quickly and if you didn't check for a while, could easily end up with ketones and eventually DKA. I know it would be unusual for someone on this board (as we're all switched on, test regularly, etc) to have that happen - but imagine if you didn't check very often.

I got some Diastix today at Boots for just over ?5 but will be asking my GP if I can get them on prescription.

I've also had full-fat coke despite asking for diet, but the last time I went to lincoln with my parents my mum ordered diet coke and then asked after the barman had served it if it was definately diet. (He looked a bit put out at this) So she explained I'm a T1 and gave him the 'mum look'.. so I definately got Diet :D
