This morning I did my BG on my code free monitor it read 10.1 had a banana done it again just before my lunch read 15.8
I thought that can't be right so I did it again straight after and it read 18.5 that can't be right
My monitor is lying to me and I thought they were accrute.
Very confused

Hi Lesley. I have only eaten 1 banana since diagnosis a few years ago because like you I went into double figures after. I've since learned that bananas can do that to some of us. Whilst meters can give false readings in this case I think it's just the banana effect!

Hi Lesley,

Fruit..... The more tropical the worse they can be for our BG.... I actually avoid fruit altogether (apart from the occasional slice of Apple Pie), many people find they tolerate just berries.

Also there can be quite a variance between meter readings, I forget what the allowed tolerance is (perhaps 10-15%) so the higher your BG is the more variance you can theoretically have.

I hope so because I've just managed to get my levels down...but how come I got to different readings in a matter of a minute.

Bananas are only good for us if we're seriously hypo. They send my BGs through the roof, so I reserve them for hypo days when I can't get my numbers out of the basement. It takes a shedload of insulin for me to combat one nana so, as much as I love them, I avoid.

These meters are a guide, not an exact science, for that you would have to pay many thousands of dollars..... Having said that they are still an invaluable tool in our self management (as you have just found out)

If your numbers were still on the rise, such a difference would be possible, but you might well get some solution and try calibrating your meters just in case.

Thank you all for your comments No Bananas for me as from now

:(...... I used to really enjoy Bananas

I must be the lucky one. I've only had 1 banana since diagnosis & cope with it quite well. It was slightly under ripe, which helps.

They're one of the things I found hardest to give up, along with mango which is almost as bad. I was a real fresh fruit fan before dx, but now I'm reduced to a few types of berry (blueberries, blackberries and raspberries mostly) if I absolutely must have some fruit. They don't seem to affect my numbers as much.

Ah yes, the banana. Ace BG lifter.

I used to love banana butties- soft white bread, lashings of soft butter and a sliced banana. Haven't had that in 40 years.

Don't even get me started on strawberry jam and banana sandwiches....🙂

I can handle bananas as long as they have only just turned yellow, when very ripe I won't touch them.

When l was visiting the mum in law, she made a lovely pudding that was basically Greek yogurt, creme fresh & cream mixed in with slices of banana & topped with 85% dark chocolate shavings. My BG actually came down after that.

Am happy to say I used to eat bananas under suference pre diagnosis as I thought they were good for me. One of the positives of diabetes as I now never have to again! 🙂

I am not too bad with banana but tend to have the smaller ones!
Before I knew better, I bought a bunch of small organic Mexican bananas..... Oh, what a mistake, tasted like cardboard & never ripened....

I often have just a banana for breakfast...seem to do okay with them...limit myself to one a day...it's all about what suits you...one persons tolerance is an others disaster...just keep testing and you'll find out what suits you...good luck.
