We like eating out and have just come back from lunch. Until COVID I always found something to eat - usually salad or omelettes. But since the lockdowns, all 4 of the places we used to frequent have stopped doing both. Omelettes I can understand, with the lack of free range eggs due to bird flu. But why, oh why, can't a salad be provided, when they all offer salad garnish, to go with the chips and bread chunks that come with every meal? Soup of the day was root vegetable - potato, parsnip, carrot, swede, bread chunk. They had a menu suggestion book, so I made a polite one and hope summer will bring back the salad.
It would be so nice if all "eating places" could be mindful of low carb foods, that would benefit a lot of people and not just diabetics. These days it seems a recyclable cup of tea or coffee is about my only choice. We do have the carvery, that allows me to pick and choose, but not a meal I want that often plus it is pretty much isolated being sat by the canal, lovely and relaxing with the views mind!
Our Asda now has concessions instead of its cafe, so there is a choice of Greggs, Cinnabon, Leon, Bubbleology or Sbarro - thank goodness for plain old tea/coffee! Now I hear that Tesco cafes may go a similar route. Our main Morrison's "restaurant" is going through a refurb and is due to reopen any day now - just hope they haven't changed the menu too much. at least an all-day breakfast is tolerable as you can (could) choose your items.
My forever growing list of food allergies and intolerances has never made it easy for me to eat out, doubled with the fairly recent diagnosis of diabetes, it can be so much more frustrating these days.
If I were a lot younger and had the money (and strength) I would open a cafe for low carb and low GI food and drink - I reckon it would be a real hit for diabetics and those who want a healthier lifestyle. Please will someone pick up my idea and run with it!! Now!!! 🙂
I would go down the same route I do at home - not eat all the carbs.
Ok, so it is hard to avoid the carbs in a root vegetable soup.
I enjoy a curry and am grateful naans and rice are added extra so I can get an extra side dish and not bother with the carby bits.
I also find many restaurants and cafes are happy to replace chips or potatoes with a salad. If they do a salad garnish, they will do a bigger garnish.
I confess I avoid chains - the independent places are more amenable to dietary tweaks as they are not restricted by menus set by “corporate”.
