Hello newbie to this forum. T2 for 17 years. I’m so frustrated at present. I’ve lost 28lbs in the last three months doing low carb and 16/8 IF, my Hba1c was at 80 when I started and today came back at 83! I’m so disappointed. I’ve lost 4 inches off my waist, do Hit training three times a week, walk and garden on the others, yet my blood sugar after a workout is stubbornly high, today it reached 19.2 so I took 10 units of insulin to bring it down, I recently had a c peptide that came back at 2000 p/mmol, so plenty of insulin in my body, just can’t seem to break this insulin resistance. Frustrated and gutted.

Hi and welcome.

I can understand you being gutted when you have put in so much hard work. That is a real kick in the teeth! You have my sympathies.

Do you take insulin regularly or just when your levels are high and which insulin(s) do you have?
Are you also on Metformin to help tackle the insulin resistance?

Are you aware that high intensity exercise will naturally push your BG levels up because it stresses the body and that causes the liver to release glucose from it's stores as part of the fight or flight response, so if you test directly after such exercise then you will see a higher level, particularly if your levels were a bit high to start with. I am not saying that you won't reap the benefits of this exercise later in bringing glucose down but right afterwards it will be higher than expected. Gardening or walking is much better exercise for lowering your levels in real time.

Also, when levels are in double figures, I think we all experience some increased insulin resistance, so keeping your levels in single figures as much as possible will mean you need less insulin than if they are persistently high and needing corrections.

Hi, I was on Lantus, currently 2000 metformin. I managed to get off the Lantus as I was getting great numbers, I was on Libre 2 which predicted hba1c of 63, hence my disappointment. I’m gonna extend my fasts to 48 hours and 16/8 eating window I’m determined to stay off insulin as it makes me so fat, I can’t stand it.

Fasting for long periods can slow the metabolism down and at the end of the fast you are more likely to eat too much to make up for it, so it can be counter productive for weight loss.
Insulin should not in itself cause weight gain. People feel it does because it allows the glucose from the food they eat to be stored as fat when it previously just sat in their blood stream. The answer is putting less glucose into the system or ridding the liver and pancreas of visceral fat by following a short term (8-12 weeks) low calorie diet ie The Newcastle Diet or Fast 800. I appreciate that you have already lost a lot of weight and inches from your waist but without knowing your starting weight/size it is difficult to comment as to whether that is likely to have been enough or if you are one of the people for whom the Newcastle diet doesn't work.

What sort of things do you typically eat and drink in a day? Just wondering if you are overlooking something, although clearly it has been working for you in terms of weight loss so far. Have you much more weight to go to get to a normal BMI?

Hi, I was 16 stone on with BMI of 30, I’ve lost 2 stone and a BMI of 24, I keep carbs below 50g a day, I mainly eat fish, meat and have a rainbow plate of veg. Breakfast is scrambled eggs/Salmon/bacon. I drink two coffees a day before 12, use stevia and a dash milk. Rest of the day is water. I go to the gym and do HIT training 3x 1hr a week, then walking or gardening on other days. I’m 5.11 and working towards a further 2 stone (12 stone) I’ve just bought fast 800 book and I’m gonna start that on 17th June.

Sounds like you really are doing as much as you possibly can. It is so desperately unfair that you aren't seeing better results.

For information, many of us find Libre reads consistently lower than finger prick BG and as a result, it's predicted HbA1c is usually lower than actual blood HbA1c result by up to about 10%. That said, yours is much further out than that. Were you using Libre throughout the 3 month period that the HbA1c would have covered and was it perhaps showing you as hypo overnight sometimes as compression lows (false lows from lying on the sensor in your sleep) could also impact the HbA1c prediction. Still doesn't explain why your levels are not responding to the measures you are taking though.

I really feel for you, but also wish you lots of luck with your renewed efforts. Hopefully you will break through a barrier, and if so please come back and let us know as there will be others who will find it encouraging and no doubt be interested to know how you did it. And even if you don't succeed, please do come back anyway and tell us about it, as you will not be the only one who isn't getting the results they deserve and it is at least comforting for others to know you/they are not the only one.
Keeping fingers crossed for you!

Welcome to the forum @Paul5889

Sorry to hear about your frustratingly BG levels despite the huge amount of effort you are putting in, low carb menu, and your high levels of insulin production.

It does sound like you are already using lots of the strategies that forum members often find effective. I take my hat off to you for continuing to look for other options and tactics (like the Fast 800) that might help.

Have you tried lower intensity Cardio rather than the HIT classes to see if that makes a difference (I’m not quite sure how anaerobic your HIT usually is)

Hope your Fast800 efforts help a little.
