Before K was Dx i used to put a carton of fruit juice in her lunch box everyday. When she was dx her Dsn told me not to give it to her - 'at least for now'.

I assume it gives a big 'spike' as it is so quickly digested, but i was wondering if it would be Ok to reintroduce it now with her lunch.

One of the things that really bugs me about this D is that, if anything, K has a LESS healthy diet now. I liked her to have the juice as meant she had another of her 5 a day. She also used to have an apple or banana mid morning but now has a cereal bar or rice cakes. And dont get me started on artificial sweetner!

I did think of one of those cartons of 'juicy water' (75% juice 25% water)? I really am fed up with giving her things like 'Fruit Shoot' for school.

And, yes I know eating the whole fruit would be better, and she does have grapes, strawberries raisins or dried apricots too, but its the quality of her drink I'm trying to imrove. Does anyone have any thoughts on how we could get around this, please?

I would say its fine to give her it again, as part or her lunch, obviously testing to see the effect would be wise, but hopefully together with the other lunch items she has, the glucose release may be slowed slightly.........

I'm only speaking from experience, but I find fruit juice does give quite a spike. However, if Katie has it along with a starchy carbs meal the carbs will slow down the absorption of the sugar. When I was young on MDI we were told sugar was okay in small quantities, provided it was taken with a meal rather than on its own.

My suggestion would be to reintroduce it slowly. Start off with small cartons and check BG two hours post meal for a few days to see the effect. You might need to adjust her lunchtime dose a little to accommodate. You will quite quickly get a feel for how the fruit juice affects her. It might be easier to keep the amount of carbs in her lunch much the same for a few days to limit variables.

I guess it's really trial and error. Everyone's body is different.

Good luck!

Not sure why kids should have to carry drinks to school. Admittedly I was at primary school in 1970s and didn't have diabetes then, but there were jugs of water on dinner tables. Even today, and on recent research project involving measuring children in primary schools, I usually carry / carried an empty bottle to fill when I see a water fountain.

Changed days eh? Its a shame.....

I used to take squash, but there were always plenty of cans of coke, etc in evidence. The water in the jugs always tasted a bit stale and didn't get drunk much. Maybe because it was London water, possibly.

Tescos and other places do these little pots of fruit slices which are quite refershing and give a good variety. Would they be of any use (or a home made version) for the 5 a day ?
As said, the fruit juice on its own will prob give quite a spike unless it's drunk just before playtime (do they still have them?) so can be run off a bit.
