Evening All,

Just found out that I am on the verge of having T2 diabetes and have to visit GP to see him about my condition.
I am finding very hard to find food stuffs without any Sugar in them to help reduce my sugar intake, I know that I will have to take more exercise and eat more carefully but I am finding it very hard and also feeling frightened about what the damage it could do

The good news is you’re ‘on the verge’ as opposed to a full diabetic diagnosis so there’s much you can do to help yourself Paul and you don’t need to feel alone with it when there’s people who understand on here.
Don’t concentrate on sugar, it’s carbs you need to watch which convert to sugar. Moderate things like bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, pies, crisps, cakes, biscuits etc. and make your plate heavier with vegetables, fats and proteins. Look for lower carb bread.

You can turn this around and others will be along with help and suggestions. See it as your challenge for 2018. You can do this I promise!

Thanks for the reply it's all so confusing I have had the Nurse at Doctors saying to lose weight and exercise more plus go on a diet also she said that I could eat bread rice etc has long as it was wholemeal so I think it's going to be a learning curve

It’s true that wholemeal is preferable Paul and complex carbs are better than simple ones. You’ll be on a steep learning curve and may find that medics suggest much more carbs than ‘real’ diabetics can actually eat without spiking.
Exercise after meals, even a walk will help enormously and losing weight helps to shift the visceral fat around our organs to allow a more efficient insulin response. If you’re very overweight, losing weight will really help you to level your blood glucose.
Ideally you’d be able to self test at home because that’s the only way you’ll know how certain foods uniquely affect your b/g levels but your surgery is unlikely to provide a meter so you’ll need to self fund.

Thanks will start the learning curve next week after seeing GP but already started to cut down on crisps buiscuts and chocolate I know it's only a start but I am going to try

Don’t panic you are pre diabetic so you can deal with this . As Amigo says concentrate on reducing carbs. Of course forget sugar in tea or coffee but severely restrict bread rice pasta and potatoes. I adopted this diet when I was diagnosed and in 3 months my blood sugar was in pre diabetic range and a year I’m still there.

So you can eat non root veg and eggs, cream, milk, meat etc. Wine ok but beer has high carbs. I find Indian takeaway easier to choose low carb but Chinese difficult as sugary sauces.

When you say cut do you mean 1 packet iof crisps a day and 1 biscuit or 1 mini chocolate bar because frankly that’s your new daily max though I only allow myself one of these not all 3 but my diabetes in full swing!
