A Prison Service spokesman said: "HMP Frankland prisoner Peter Coonan (born Sutcliffe) died in hospital on 13 November. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed."

I still remember a news story about necrophiliac Jimmy Saville being suspected as the "yorkshire ripper". Probably spurred on by the the fact one of Sutcliffe's victims was found near Savilles Apartment.

The police were completely incompetent looking for the "Yorkshire Ripper". Their view was that his victims were prostitutes, so little effort was put in. It was only when respectable ladies were attacked that took any mind. By that time, they had been fooled by a fairly inept hoaxer who phoned them (with a wearside accent) and sent then a letter. Women who survived attacks had told the police that their attacker had a Yorkshire accent. The police questioned Sutcliffe at least three times because his car was seen in the area of a some attacks, the last time a couple of years and more attacks later. The incompetence was beyond belief.

Interestingly, the police were slow to act in the original Jack the Ripper for exactly the same reasons - the victims were characterized as women of easy virtue.

By the way, Jimmy Savile's stock in trade was paedophilia, not necrophilia. What that shows is the police in Yorkshire were fully aware of Savile's predilections, but did absolutely nothing about it. Jimmy had friends in high places. He has never been arrested for his crimes, then or since.

There were attacks which were not linked to the ripper even though they were similar, as the victims were not prostitutes - so obviously not the same man.
When I worked in a college where young police recruits were doing various courses they were known as 'the 40 watts', as they were so dim.

There were all sorts of theories going around - though I suspect that Sutcliffe was attacking women but not linked to the crimes as it was so firmly agreed that his victims sere prostitutes.
During the 1970s I was in my 20s and refused to stay home at night. I went out prepared and there were at least three men who were taught a lesson they probably did not forget in a hurry. The police were never much interested about attacks on young women back then and 'asking for it' was their usual response.
My husband once came running up behind me on a shortcut I used to use, an unlit stretch of disused railway, without calling to me as he approached and he was lucky not to get hurt.

It's interesting how times have changed since the Savile crimes were brought to light. As I said earlier, it's clear that the Police were aware that Savile liked young ladies, but kept quiet because he was a National Treasure.

Fast forward to 2014, and, without a shred of reliable evidence, we get Cliff Richards' home raided by Police effectively live on TV, as the Police had notified the BBC what they were about to do. And because a couple of TV personalities were revealed as serial offenders, the fantasist known as Nick traduced the reputations of politicians alive and dead with bizarre accusations, the dumb police believed every word he said. Prior to Savile, they would have given him the bum's rush as the nutter he was.

As the police considered destroying folk's reputation as a national sport, convictions for rape have fallen. So not only are the police intrinsically racist, they are intrinsically misogynist as well.

I was in my teens when Sutcliffe was committing his crimes. It was a very scary time for my sister and all my female friends :( He was actually caught in Broomhall, which was the red light district of Sheffield - I was at the University there at the time. West Yorkshire police were useless - they actually interviewed him 9 times, but ignored all the evidence from witnesses/survivors because he wasn't a Geordie :(

Both dead now where they belong !

I wouldn't be so hard on Wearside Jack. What he did was expose the the incompetence of the Yorkshire police. It's not his fault that the idiots picked it up and ran with it, even though it flew in the face of other evidence from surviving victims. They had set themselves up for such a fraud by revealing lurid details of the ripper's crimes. He never spoke of anything the general public didn't know. He may in fact have been surprised by both the response and the consequences, given that it would be a first for a serial killer to taunt the police.

He was definitely in my home town of Barnsley at one time when I was there, and my father also saw the vehicle he drove - part of the registration plate the police were looking for was perhaps TTV - it is a long time ago now, but we parked next to a white Ford similar to one my brother drove at the time - mid 70s, and we both looked at the number of it to see if it was his. We both noticed it was taped on - but by the time we realised it was weeks later.
The information on the false tape was actually wrong - one woman 's body was still to be found so if a proper evaluation had been done it might have been realised a lot sooner. There are some strange people about.
