Three weeks into my new regime and getting to grips with food do's and don'ts. Trying to keep tabs on carbs. and cals. One of the things I really miss is fresh fruit which I used to eat plentifully. I'm now not sure and am holding back on eating fruit freely. I'm treating it as a treat but should I be more relaxed about it?

I eat satsumas, nectarines, pears, apples, blueberries, raspberries, and strawberries. I have every day at least 2 portions. I don't do frozen berries some have I tried last week when I could not get get fresh blueberries, tastless mush.
Why not try and see how it affects you.

Hi Browser. I know of one person on here who's BGs loves fruit. This is where your glucose meter becomes your best buddy. Its matter of trying and testing. Perhaps try 1 apple and see how you go, if all seems well, try it out. Couple more times before you go onto another fruit.

Hi Browser.
I would be abit brave and just try it, personally for me my BG hates bananas and grapes but im absolutly fine with nectarines and satsumas.

As I said, I've taken the occasional piece of fruit, but I'll have a go at trying regular helpings, then test for effects. Would I use the same routine to test for fruit i.e. test/eat fruit/test after two hours?

Yes, though i usually eat most of my fruit with my meals.

That's what I would do. I hope you find some fruit that your BGs like. Personally I would avoid grapes.

Had a mini 'binge' of an apple, two satsumas and a small banana. Pre eating reading was 6.8, then 7.8 after two hours. Result.🙂

Test and test again with each different fruit then your body will tell you how it handles each one. Invaluable information to give you a reference point

Fruit varies considerably in the carb content. As a general rule of thumb, berries are lower carb and 'exotic/ tropical' fruits higher carb. Here's some data from CoFID :
Carbs per 100gm :
Raspberries - 4.6
Strawberries - 6.1
Oranges - 8.0
Nectarines - 9.0
Blueberries - 9.1
Pineapple - 10.1
Green grapes - 15.2
Red grapes - 17.0
Banana - 20.0
Bear in mind that these data are per 100gm. So it takes quite a lot of raspberries to make up the equivalent carb intake of one banana.

As far as I can tell, eating fruit with a meal will have less impact on BS than if you eat fruit on its own as a snack. I've been craving fruit, especially oranges, so occasionally I've had half of one at the end of a meal. Will never snack on fruit now, except a few berries in natural yoghurt.

@Browser hi. My bgls can tolerate a small orange after a meal or as a snack - as too frozen berries with 2 dessertspoon of yogurt after a meal or as a snack. (I don't let them defrost before eating them otherwise they go mushy) Unfortunately banana's & apples aren't on my shopping list anymore mores the pity. Personally I would suggest one fruit at a time to see what impact they have on your bgl as opposed to eating more than one or two at the same time, x

I've been eating plums. Can't resist them. Have no idea how they affect my BG as the doc says I don't need to measure and won't give me strips. 😡
