After a week with stress levels off the scale I decided to treat myself to Fish 'n' Chips. I always end up with about three times more chips that I want. I have tried cooling and microwaving but they were truly awful! Has anybody successfully frozen and reheated them?..

How about roughly chopping them and using to make a sort of corned beef hash or bubble and squeak with some onions and whatever other veg you have?

Never occurred to me to try! The problem with freezing is presumably that it tends to destroy the texture, particularly the crispy outer layer of the chips?

I guess you might try turning them into something else, so mash them up a bit and fry them as fritters or something (so create a new crispy layer)? (Obviously you could add other things (garlic, onions, peppers) while you're at it.)

Don't think I would try microwaving frozen chips. The reason is that I think microwaves are only absorbed by water and so nothing can get hotter than the boiling point of water and anything that is meant to be crispy will simply go soggy. Turning them into some sort of hash which you then fry will get them up to the temperature you need to make them edible on reuse.

The alternative approach is to train your chip shop. I have got my local chip shop comfortable with the idea of a "minichips", which is a small portion of chips about half the size of their small portion of chips. My testing has shown I can cope with this amount.

Buy some potatoes and make your own....???

I haven't but I know people who have but they then reheat in a hot oven.

I regularly make my own chips in an Airfryer. Any I don’t eat I save in a silver takeaway carton. To reheat I pop the carton back in the Airfryer and use the Reheat mode for 3mins. Good as new.

For other ideas, see what can i do with extra fries? - Test Food Kitchen.

I have tried throwing them in the oven underneath the grill and it is somewhat okay.

Deep fry after defrosting.
Live dangerously.

I eat any spare chips cold the next day. Different but equally tasty IMO.

We just have a bag of frozen ones. I can then take out a measured portion (I simply do not have the will power to leave some freshly cooked chips if we purchase them form our local excellent chip shop) and enjoy every one of them, along with the mayonnaise!!!!!!

Chippy chips mmmmmmm

There's never any left with us to freeze, but don't mind saying that I make great homemade chips.

Use maris piper pots, boil then simmer for 5 mins, drain water off shake pan slightly with lid on to rough them up a bit, empty onto kitchen towel then allow to cool, deep fry till slightly brown then remove & place back on towel, after 10 mins refry, guarantee you chips will be delicious.

I am giving in this evening. It is chips tonight.

I was on a business trip this week.
The first night I was alone and, not being a fan of taking a restaurant table for one, I had fish and chips on the promenade.
There were a few chips left but I knew they would not be wasted. The seagulls had been keeping me company from a distance throughout my meal.
