No, most Type2 do not get prescribed meters or test strips on the NHS. Type 1 do not all get then either.

Type 1 have been getting test strips for years now. (Not necessarily for the meters we'd prefer, admittedly.) Not usually meters, but they're usually cheap enough nowadays and I'm sure anyone who needed one could get something through a DSN (manufacturers are usually fine giving away meters when there's a chance of some prescribed test strips).

Does this work for the Libre too? I’ve been put on the sensors but only using my phone, she said we would need the consultant to sign off the meter

Depends on your local team, probably. A couple of years ago (before our CCG prescribed Libre) when I went on our local I can't believe it's not DAFNE course they gave everyone a free sensor and a reader (I was already self funding so I didn't take the reader); an Abbott rep came to one session and talked about the Libre sensors and about the meter. I suspect the team had a few readers and things left over from such courses. (At the time the readers wouldn't have been that helpful because the strips weren't usually prescribed in our CCG, being slightly too expensive.)

But in general the money's in the test strips (and sensors, in Abbott's case), so I'd have thought you ought to be able to get a reader somehow for less than retail price.

Hi I was prescribed the Libre and used it for about 6 months. Following Animas withdrawing from the market i had to change pumps. My Diabetic clinic were allocating the Tandem Tslim as replacements and in preparation for that switch I was also switched over to the Dexcom G6. Which is better? I lean towards the G6 but that is primarily based on its integration with the insulin pump and the use of my iphone as a receiver which means unlike the Libre i don't need to carry around an aextra device (however having said that I do carry the Libre receiver around with me for finger reading / Ketones if necessary). I have never had issues with attaching or keeping sensors attached although i do know others do have issues (its mentioned every day on the Facebook group page.....). More people should have access the G6 was a godsend when i had a bad week in November and had to increase my insulin by over 300% - not something i would have confidence to do without CGM.
How do you find the g6? My diabetic clinic said they do not fund it yet which I think is total lies...I am going to test the g6 out first and see if I like it then go from there

Hi Phoebe

I purchased a reader at the start when I was self funding. When I moved to NHS funding I got the sensors. I have started to use my phone as well but still revert to the reader as it is easier to stuff in my bra when playing sport. These are probably still available, but you have to purchase them separately.

My next pump will link to the phone, so that may get me into the habit of using that all the time.

Hi really like the G6 and Dexcom as a company. Had very few issues but if the sensor attachment device fails or you need to replace the sensor within its 10 day life (for example hospital scan or you knock it off) Dexcom will replace and courier replacement which usually arrives the next day. The mmol/L is in line with finger pricking most of the time, occaisionally i have issues for the first 6 hours of a new sensor (less than 1 in 10). The Dexcom App is easy to use and the information now available on the Dexcom Clarity App is really good. Integration with my t-slim pump is usually very good although I'm an my 3rd arm sensor and connectivity seems to be an issue for the first 12 hours if i have my pump attached to the other side of my body. I don't have a problem after this but that may be due to changing the pump to the same side of my body.
