Frederick Sanger devised a method to sequence the various amino acids that make up proteins. He chose insulin to work on because of it's potential use in medicine. His work made possible the development of the laboratory made insulins that many of us use today.
He received a Nobel prize for this.

Later he worked on creating a method for sequencing DNA. The Sanger method meant that large amounts of DNA could be sequenced more quickly than had been possible before and was used to create the first full human genome sequence.
He received a second Nobel prize for this work. (shared with 2 other scientist)

This ability to sequence DNA meant scientists have been able to isolate the genetic causes for many serious diseases caused by single gene mutations for example the several versions of MODY . I means also that scientists have be able to find some of the genes that seem to predispose to T1 and T2.

He is the only British Scientist to have won 2 Nobel prizes but then it's a very select group since there are only 3 others (and according to the obituaries a very modest man.
