Anita Shaw has led an interesting life. She grew up on a farm just north of Henry. She taught Art in Bridgeport and Geneva before being recruited to teach in Omaha during the riots in the 1960s. She taught in Connecticut and Washington. She’s done this all while having continuing difficulties with her feet and balance.

“I fell a lot as a child,” Shaw said. “I would be walking and just fall over in high school.”

While teaching in Washington state, her foot pain increased. Shaw was on her feet at work and walked three miles a day, but doctors said there was nothing wrong.

After several doctors and specialists, she was told she had arthritis. In 2005, Shaw was diagnosed with diabetes. After losing 110 pounds, Shaw’s podiatrist noticed bone flecks in her x-rays and diagnosed her with charcot arthropathy, or charcot joint disease.
