Forgot To Put New Novorapid In Fridge

Aaargh, R collected a prescription for me on Thursday, and I've only just unpacked it and remembered it had Novorapid in it! The pharmacy normally gives insulin to him in a separate packet and he puts the packet straight into the fridge when he gets back, but they'd just put it in with all the other things. So it's been out of the fridge for 2 days.

I've put it in the fridge now. Do you think it will still be useable? I mean, obviously the first cartridge will be useable now, but do you think the others will continue to useable after 4 weeks?
 
Yes, no problem, the “28 days out of the fridge” rule is only a guideline and they've only been out for 2 days, it's perfectly safe to put them back in the fridge! As long as they haven't been sitting on a windowsill in direct sunlight for those two days they will be fine.
 
Thanks, Sally - it's likely to be 2-3 months before I use all the cartridges, so I really didn't want to have to chuck the remaining ones out after 28 days. Thankfully they've been sitting in the hall by the front door, not anywhere sunny.
 
Give it a try and see you see I think insulin is tougher than they think . until the other day unbeknownst to me I was using Insulatard (Basal) with an expiry date of June 2019 , my Basal needs had crept up slightly and I didn’t know why.
I suggest you order more so you have some fresh to fall back on if you spot a problem
 
I’ve taken Novorapid on holiday with me, so it’s been out of the fridge for a week, and then shoved it back in when I got back, and it’s always been fine.
 
Thanks all, sounds like I will probably be OK, though I'll watch for higher blood sugar when I'm getting towards the end of the pack (and for lower blood sugar when I start the next pack, in case my doses have gone up gradually and need to go down suddenly). So long as it's just likely to be a bit less effective and not go off or anything like that!
 
I managed to waste a batch. I know it was silly and the first time in 12 years
We put it in the glove compartment in our way home from the pharmacy, as it is cooler than elsewhere in the car. A mistake as we forgot to take it out and my OH found it three very hot days later! We abandoned that batch.

But perhaps use that batch up next?

Good call to abandon your glovebox cooked ones @SB2015 - not really worth the BG upheaval of ‘testing it to be sure’
 
Eek, @SB2015 😱 - yes, I think I would have abandoned that batch too. The only time I ever chucked out insulin, it had been in the boot of a very hot car all day, but that was just one cartridge, thankfully for me.

@everydayupsanddowns - I am ahead of you, I'm already using one of the new ones rather than the ones which were still in the fridge from the last lot 🙂
