Hi Girls,

I'm 51 and haven't had a period now for coming up to 5 months. Before diagnosis, I naturally presumed I was going through the "change" leading to menopause. However, since starting on the Metformin 2 x 500mg daily, no other drugs involved, I have been getting period like cramps, lower stomach and down below! I know Metformin is prescribed for ladies who suffer from Polycystic ovaries and just wondered if the Metformin is going to bring on another period?

I would appreciate if any other ladies of a "certain age" could get in touch, as this is intriguing me.

I'm also panicking about losing hair? Has anyone else reported this problem or could this be a symptom of something else? I have read that woman have had this problem and hope it doesn't happen to me!

Donna 🙂

I'm 53 now and I've had similar problems when my blood sugars were high (as they are now) and have gone for months without a period. At one stage I thought I was done with it all having had six months with nothing. Of course, it could be down to my age but I've had no other menopausal symptoms, no hot flushes, no night sweats. Plenty of emotional upheavals, but that could be the diabetes.🙄

I've just 'come on' this morning (a bit over three weeks late)... What a day I'm having!

So, I'm afraid the answer could be both, or it could be either. There's a blood test you doctor can do to see if you're at 'that age' yet. Might be worth asking for.

Hi Donna I started the change 2 1/2 years ago when I was 49. I haven't had a peroid for about 18 months now(hooray!), and yes I have had symptoms as well in the past. As for the hair loss I have not suffered from it at all. Try not to worry to much, it's different for lots of women, it's the horrible sweats I hate. Hope you don't have too many problems, by the way I don't take any thing for the menopause, I just leave it to nature. Take care Donna. Sheena x

Not everyone gets the classic menopausal syptoms. I seem to be just sailing through mine with no problems. Because we are all different we all experience menopause in different ways.

Another factor in missing periods may be stress. A few years ago I went through a very stressfull time and my periods stopped completely for several months.

Things like fluctuations in hormones will affect the glucose levels in most people. Insulin is a type of hormone too.
