British sport faces a diabetes time bomb as the number of undiagnosed sufferers edges towards the one million mark, a former England legend has warned.

Ex-Tottenham captain Gary Mabbutt, 53, says children are consuming dangerous amounts of sugary drinks without being aware of the risk of serious disease.

Despite enjoying an era of success at events like the London 2012 Olympics and Wimbledon, Mabbutt, now a respected sporting ambassador, says the growing number of diabetes cases could wreak a devastating long-term effect on the nation’s sporting chances if it is not tackled.

Mabbutt, who has suffered from type 1 diabetes for nearly 40 years, said: “We need to teach children more and more on the growing problems they will face in life from sugary drinks.
