Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi so after 25 years of type 1 diabetes and moving on to free style libra yesterday the professionals still want me to do a food diary I’m completely aware of carbs and ratio why would they ask me to do this it feels like I’m an idiot

They maybe just want to see what foods are effecting you most

I wouldn't take offence, they are probably just trying to help, sorry but even after 25 years you won't know everything and we can all learn even @trophywench and @Pumper_Sue would agree I bet

I don't bother anymore but I did for a long time (but then again I suffered an eating disorder too) but I had a year at least worth in a4 refill pads
xx

It’s probably just a protocol for anyone moving on to the Libre. Were you using the Libre privately before? If so, you’ll know how much more info you get. If you weren’t, (and I suspect a lot of new prescriptions are for people who haven’t used it before) it can flag up lumps and bumps in your control that you didn’t know were there, and having the food diary alongside gives a more complete picture when your health professionals are trying to work out the graph. It’s one thing for them to know that you ate 30g carb and took 3 units, but if there’s a bump in your graph at some point, it helps them to know whether the carb was accompanied by fat, which can slow absorption of the carbs, or was protein heavy, which can then be converted to glucose later. It all adds to the picture.

I still keep a diary but that’s my choice. It helps to see how things are going and how you respond. Never had anyone ask to see them though.

Quite often when you are so close to things you can't see the wood for the trees 🙂 they are probably seeing if your carb ratio needs a tweak or a basal adjustment. It's amazing what can be learnt after viewing 24/7 readout. If you haven't got one you might get a pump out of it, if you want one 🙂 Besides as @Kaylz said you never stop learning no matter how long you have had diabetes for 🙂

Hi thanks all for you reply’s I just hate doing food diary’s yes paying privately for the libra and it’s totally changed my life for the better and I understand the learning side of it it just feels like I’m being back to 25 years ago you know the saying ya can’t teach your grandma to suck eggs and due to COVID it’s phone calls only so how are they going to see them suppose I’m just frustrated

Well if you haven't got one you will be expected to buy a scanner and email the diary over to them as well as send the results of the Libre as well. (this is tongue in cheek by the way)

Yeah got all of them happy to do all that but they weren’t interested

Food diary, not kept or had to show one since early days.

With Libre View clinics can access your data anytime, you have to accept invitation on app so info is shared, did this just recently.

I've kept a food diary ever since i was diagnosed type 1. I use it to look back over recent weeks, spot any patterns, see how different foods affect me at different times. I've always found it useful, but each to their own.

Hope your food diary isn’t too much of a faff @Lianne

Have they said how many weeks of data they are looking for?

No they haven’t and it’s a real faff they never even asked me how much insulin I was taking just feel very let down and I really don’t want to do it anymore

Ah sorry to hear this.

I think if you can keep a week or two’s worth of food diary, alongside BG levels that should give a reasonable amount of information for a discussion.

Unless you can contact them and ask how much information they are looking for? No point in taking a box-file of notes if they will only read the top two pages (unless you find the note-taking helpful yourself... which it sounds like you don’t!)

Then don’t do it! It’s your diabetes not theirs. Tell them bluntly, tell them tactfully, tell them a white lie. Don’t feel forced to do things. Often these people run on auto-pilot.

Why don't you ask them 'Why? of what use do you believe this will be to you or me?'
