Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I am 67 years old , along with high blood pressure. I had been diagnoise with type 2 diabetes over 10 years and have struggled throughout to maintain my sugar levels. I try to eat healthy, but no matter what i do , i cannot kept my sugar levels on a steady levels. I am on insulin and metformin ( 16 units per day). I have since had treatment as it was found i have fluid in one of my eyes, so i was recieving laser. 3 months ago i recieved great news that the fluid had cleared and i didnt have to come back until 3 months. Today i went for an appointment and was devastated to find out that fluid is in both of the eyes and they feel that i will need more laser treatments. I prosponed this and was advised to come back in 3 months time. Im devastated because my eyesight is more perfect than its ever been and i struggle to understand why it has gotten real bad in a short space of time. I will appreachiate it if anyone can offer some advice on what i can do- if any to avoid this or what i can change to lessen this?

Hi stephanie, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm very sorry to hear about the problems you are having with your eyes, it must be very distressing. We have many members who have a lot more experience than me about eye problems, so hopeflly they will be along to share their experiences. I have some problems, but have so far escaped treatment. My consultant has advised me that the best way to avoid things getting worse is to keep my sugar levels stable and as near 'normal' as I can, and also to keep my blood pressure under control as this is also a factor.

Are you on medication for your blood pressure? It might be worth reviewing this if so, so that you can be sure it is in a safe range. Do you test your blood sugar levels? Getting these under control is probably the best thing you can do for your eyes - are there any particular areas that you struggle with? There are lots of experienced people here who will be able to help with suggestions of ways you might be able to improve things - it might be a good idea if you start keeping a food diary and let us know the kind of things you eat, including the amount of carbohydrates in your meals, as this can be a very good start to spotting areas for improvement.

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and we will do our best to help! 🙂

Welcome Stephanie

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "fluid in your eyes", as everyone has fluid in their eyes - perhaps you mean increased presssure? This is usually glaucoma, which is treated with eye drops and / or oral medication (some of which also treats raised blood pressure) and / or laser treatment and / or surgery.
