Hi all, had my diabetic eye screening on Tuesday and mentioned to the lady I had fluctuations in my vision sometimes, she informed me this was a result of my sugars. Was just wondering if anyone else had similar experiences. Thanks.

Yes when i was diagnosed i was 108 and my vision was dreadful. Couldnt see clearly at all. Booked into Specsavers and told to get bloods tested for Diabetes.
The eyesight started improving with meds but went from short sighted to long sighted then perfect long and short. Has after a year settled down and i can see distant fine and need glasses for close up work. Which is pretty normal for my age.
My sugars are now in normal range at 36.

Some people find that reducing their blood glucose quickly can cause vision issues. My near vision was all over the place and is only now getting like normal in nine months. Pretty irritating as I was struggling to see to do my craft work, distance vision was fine. It was fine when HbA1C was 50mmol/mol.

I couldn't get specs because sight all over the place for few months so i bought cheap reading glasses and had about 6 pairs here changing as and when needed. Anything from 0.25 to 2.5. Nightmare at time but did resolve eventually. My diabetes eye screening was fine.

I have had 2 completely separate impacts on vision which are BG related over the years, thankfully fairly rare these days.

One is short term flickering/flashing as one of my hypo warning signs, mostly only in nastier hypos.

The other is the blurriness related to BG having been high for a few weeks.

What sort of visual disturbance are you experiencing?

Morning, like yourself I don't have it all the time , I think it's when my sugars have been high then low. More of like a temporary blurriness. I do also suffer from dry eyes so this probably doesn't help matters.

It doesn't help - are you prescribed eye drops - if not consult your friendly local pharmacist explain your prob and being relatively newly diagnosed T1, and invest in whatever he/she suggests as being pretty good - and then use it! (and I'm the worst advert for those last 3 words)

Yeah I have been prescribed some hydrating drops (xailin). They are ok but I find the soothing effect very short lived.

My OH gets irritated eyes sometimes and he found eye wipes useful and also a spray that you apply to closed eyes.
It is particularly bad at the moment as he has started getting hay fever.

I like that Optrex spray despite its limitations, it's very easy to use, but not that easy on the wallet - c. £8 ish.

Once again - pharmacist, You know this xailin - is there anything that gives longer lasting relief than this?

I have had the optrex spray before and it is brilliant, just the price for me that puts me off.

I repeat, cross examine the pharmacist Pat - ours is blooming great!
