Hi all.

Had my first flu jab as a Type 1 Diabetic on Monday, and I haven't felt right since. Sugars all up feeling pretty rubbish. Had to come home from work early today. My family have all had a sickness bug aswell, so not sure if it could be that, even though I haven't actually been sick. On the advice of my DSN, I have increased my basal dose. Keeping a close eye on ketones and trying to follow all the sickness rules. Wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar? Thanks.

One year when the kids were small I had a double jab (flu and pneumonia) and then picked up a sickness bug that was going around the house.

I wondered if it was because my immune system was a bit stretched building antibodies to the jabs

I had my flu jab four days ago, and apart from a sore arm, as you get with any intramuscular injection, I’ve seen no difference in BG scores.

The flu jab doesn’t contain live virus, so it can’t give you even a weakened dose of flu. It takes around a fortnight to give you full immunity. Same applies to pneumovax, which protects against bacterial infection.

Obviously, neither will protect against sickness bugs going round the house, it’s nothing to do with your immune system being otherwise occupied.

Cheers. Can anyone think of any reason why my numbers would drastically change? My numbers aren't sky high but floating around the 11-12 Mark and refusing to budge below that. Have adjusted my levemir from 10 units am and pm to 14 units am and pm and still no change. Ketones were at 0.7 at one point yesterday but are now 0.2. My whole family have had a sickness bug, but I haven't actually been sick. I'm going to see if I can get a Dr appt this morning just to get checked over, but it's like someone's flicked a switch. Was also wondering if my honeymoon period may be coming to an end? I'll be a year diagnosed in November?

If your body is fighting infection (even if you don’t see symptoms) then it will push your glucose levels up. Given that everyone is sick around you I would presume that’s the case. You can always give your DSN a call and have a talk about how to manage it. They will probably be more helpful than the GP. Have they talked about sick day protocols with you?

Yeah I am eating ok and keeping up my carbohydrate intake. Drinking plenty fluids and testing sugar and ketones regularly.
