I know I have seen odd mentions on here about the flu jab. My son had his done this morning, can people just remind me again if we should expect any side effects please? I have a feeling some people were saying they did this year whereas they haven't in the past. He was fine after last years one. Thanks.

Hi Tina, it will (once again!) be a very individual thing.

I didn't have any side affects this year, but I know some on here did with raised levels for around a week.

Just keep an eye on his levels and don't panic you're getting it wrong if they are slightly high, as his body will be working to build anti-bodies! 🙂

I think most people have been OK, although more than usual have reported otherwise unexplained elevated blood sugar levels which seem to have coincided with having the jab, so something to watch out for. My own levels were higher than normal for about a week, although I had not other problems and didn't feel ill at all.

Hope your son doesn't experience any problems 🙂

Thanks for that Katie. His levels are all over the place anyway (when he tests) so probably won't see anything different to normal. His HbA1c will have been tested today too, though we don't see the GP for two weeks yet for all the results, so I think he will get a rocket up his backside then. It's not going to be at all good, in fact it will be dire, but hopefully he will get the wake up call he needs.

I had a feeling some people had written about feeling really unwell after it, and possibly sore arms too where it had been done, but I guess like with everything we just keep a close eye and will no doubt blame everything over the next two weeks on the flu jab!

Sore arm is quite common but just enough to be a nuisance.🙂

Good luck with the rocket launch too when it happens.😉

Tina - whoever gave the flu injection to your son should also have given you a patient information leaflet for the immunisation he was given - there are different versions, so it's important to read the right one- or told you the potential side effects to watch out for. Last year's may have been made by the same manufacturer, but the strains of flu virus will be different this year.

Having said all that, the key factor is to be prepared for unusual blood glucose readings, a slight fever, a slightly sore arm etc. For the last 2 issues, whatever painkiller he normally takes (paracetamol or inbuprofen if 12 years or under, aspirin is an additional option if he's over 12 years) will help, if needed.

I was a bit late with mine this year (normally October but we were away on hols then) so having read what others said this time, was prepared for high BG's and feeling grotty.

Still waiting .... nowt happened at all! Sore arm after approx 12 hours, for 24 hours-ish.

Thanks everyone for your replies. He has complained of an aching arm since coming in from school, but nothing he can't handle. He never, ever, takes any painkillers, never would as a young child either, so he will put up with it. It isn't bad anyway, but he said it hurts to lift it up much. We weren't given any information leaflet or anything. He was asked various questions, including the one about being allergic to eggs, but she just then did it, as quick as a flash. Best way for my boy!
