i bought some flight socks yesterday for my long haul flight to the US tomorrow and i noticed on the back of the pack that it says to consult a doctor or healthcare professional before wearing them if you are diabetic. Why is this? and shall i just risk wearing them as surely it's better to wear them than not?

Regardless of whether you have diabetes or not, the key thing with flight socks is to measure your legs (calves) before wearing, to ensure you have the right fit - too loose and they won't do any good, too tight and they can cause pressure problems, particularly at top of socks and hole that goes under sole / toes (if they have a hole there). If you bought them at a pharmacy, then pharmacist would have been able to advise you - they are health care professionals.

As well as flight socks, other techniques to lessen the chance of DVT, such as leg exercises, getting up and walking, keeing well hydrated etc are also very important.

Have good flights and time in USA.

Hi Carina.

I had a condition in my legs called cellulitus and was prescribed support stockings, flight socks are similar in that they are support socks, so I see no reason not to wear them, I alternate berween support stockings and diabetic socks all the time and have done for past 2 years. So wear them enjoy you flight and your holiday.

John.

My gp advised me to wear flight socks on all flights x
