Hi, for lunch I baked an individual roll consisting of 40 grams ground flaxseed, one egg, 1/2 teaspoonful baking powder, 30ml water. This was done in the oven, and it tasted pretty good compared to some I've made. I also made some mushroom soup: mushrooms, leeks, garlic clove, one chicken oxo cube. So had half the roll with a bowl of the soup, followed by the other half of the roll spread with butter and a small amount of Red Leicester cheese. Two hours later my blood glucose reading was 8.3, which seems high when flaxseed is supposedly low in carbs, much lower than a slice of wholewheat bread. The previous reading, two and a bit hours earlier, was 6.6. I thought I was making a better choice in having the flaxseed roll as opposed to a slice of bread. Any thoughts?

The increase in level was within the suggested no more than 2mmol/l, but perhaps a little surprising as there are very few carbs in flaxseed.

Might be worth checking again @AngelSprings ?

There are lots of things that affect our BG levels, and BG strips have an allowable margin of error too.

If a result doesn’t match your expectations (or even if it does!) it is often worth checking again to see whether the results you see are repeatable.

eg I am still rechecking and rechecking my reaction to craft beer, just to be sure 😛

Hello Everydayupsanddowns: Thank you for your suggestion about double checking readings when in doubt. I'll certainly do this. I was diagnosed as being pre-diabetic two years ago, and managed to get my levels down to 42. Then in the earlier part of the year wasn't well and it shot up to 49, making me definitely diabetic. The local nurse has given me six months to get the BG readings down. So have been extra diligent in restricting carbs, but find that just one slice of bread/two Ryvitas/flaxseed roll push the numbers up higher than I desire. However, today I've cut out all major carbs, apart from those existing in vegetables, dairy, etc, and the numbers have dropped. So this must be the way forward if I want to avoid going on medication.
At times you must have a real dilemma over this craft beer!
You always do a good and fair job moderator!

Flaxseed is a big ingrediency in my Keto bread and does not raise my BG and I have 3 or 4 slices a day ?.

Hi Maca44, if you remember I was the person who purchased the Morphy Richards breadmaker on your recommendation, and had great success with making the low carb loaf. However, as good as it was, it was playing havoc with my digestive system, hurting as the bread was going down. Sadly, I had to stop making it.

Thats a shame it does make me as regular as clockwork it's all that fibre but I never get any tummy trouble thankfully.
