Five more hospitals in England have declared major incidents amid “unprecedented” pressures on A&E departments.
Routine operations and staff training were postponed at both the Gloucestershire Royal and Cheltenham General hospital as resources were redirected to focus on the most ill patients and to free up hospital beds.
Scarborough Hospital also declared a major incident after what managers called an “unprecedented surge in demand”.
Appointments and routine operations were also cancelled at the Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals in Surrey, to free up beds. A spokesperson for the Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said that they were "full, like many other hospitals up and down the country".
