Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello everyone,
i was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes almost two weeks ago with a blood glucose reading of 28. Managing to keep between 5 and 15 now with a few highs and lows inbetween. It's been a bit bewildering but i've been reading up and i've very much enjoyed looking through the forum this evening.
Biggest challenge thus far has been work.. Basically a lack of understanding has made me dread going. i was also told that the company did'nt want me to have my lunch time injection in the van. I did'nt last friday and my readings were up then down after.
Anyway i'm finding i have questions as i go along and i look forward to some guidance from people that really know what it's like. 🙂

Hi, welcome to the forum 🙂 It will take a while for you to get to grips with everything, but it does sound like you're getting on with the basics very well. Sorry to hear about the problems you are encountering at work - is it a large or small company? In either event they have to make reasonable allowances for your diabetes, such as allowing you to test and inject when necessary. Why do they object to you doing it in the van.what sort of work do you do? As far as I'm concerned it's such a trivial event (in terms of the time it takes and what others observe or don't) that I think they must have a lot of misconceptions. Have a read through the following so you have a better idea of what you should expect from them, and them from you:

Have a look through our Useful links thread for some suggestions for help and support. I would especially recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas - it's a really good read (no, honestly!), covering every aspect of living with Type 1. And do ask any questions you may have - nothing is considered silly, so if it bothers you, let us know and someone will be sure to have an answer for you!

Thats great thanks i'll certainly have a read through. I'm deliver mail for a pretty large company 😉 though it's a small rural office. My manager said it would'nt look good if some member of the public were to take a photo and send it to the local paper... Pretty unbelievable but thats what happened.
Thanks again

Hi south and a warm welcome to the forum

Welcome Southterrace.

Perhaps you need to demonstrate how quickly and unremarkably you can inject - the chances of anyone seeing you doing an injection, let alone having time to take a photo is pretty remote. I'd recommend injecting into your tummy, through clothing for minimal exposure.

Welcome to the forum.

Your manager needs to be educated, just because he is ignorant it doesn't mean to say every member of the public is.
Please take no notice of him. You need your insulin, it's your exlixier of life so to speak. Besides insulin comes in pen form now so whos to know anything about what you are doing? 🙄 And even if they did realise what's it to do with them?

Agreed - people hear the word 'injection' and imagine some great syringe or something instead of a pen with a practically invisible needle on the tip.

Oh look mummy! - that man/lady is poking his biro between the buttons on his shirt!

Shock, Horror!

If I saw a photo of someone having an insulin jab in the works van I'd think .... nothing! - even with a syringe.

Hello from a fellow newbie (to the forum). IMHO, no-one should ever feel embarrassed or be discriminated against for injecting in public. I never did. It's hard enough to deal with the condition as it is, so never mind what others think, just take the opportunity to (politely) educate them.

A big welcome to the forum from me.

If I see anyone injecting insulin in public it really wouldn't bother me. Certainly not that I know more about diabetes now and probably not that much prior to diagnosis either!

Andy 🙂
