Taking omega-3 fish oil supplements is often touted as a simple way to protect your heart - but experts say the evidence that it does any good is flimsy at best.

Cochrane researchers looked at trials in over 100,000 people and found little proof that it prevented heart disease.

They say the chance of getting any meaningful benefit from taking omega-3 is one in 1,000.

Eating oily fish, however, can still be recommended as part of a healthy diet.

The review mainly looked at supplements rather than omega-3 from eating fish. Experts still believe the latter is good for the heart as well as general health.

The NHS says people should try to eat two portions of fish per week, one of which should be oily fish, such as salmon, fresh tuna or mackerel, to get enough "good" fats.

And kippers.

Supplements are never a good way to get your vitamins and such. Food is the way that nature intended, so just improve your diet. Tesco were recently running an offer on salmon fillets, with discounts if you bought three packs. I indulged.🙂

The Co-op are doing the same - I too indulged! 🙂

I am wary of buying farmed fish ,does anyone know where the best salmon can be found ?

Why are you wary of farmed fish? At least you know the fish comes from a very heavily regulated source. Same as pigs, beef cattle, and such. I ate locally farmed salmon on Mull, both fresh and smoked. I knew the manager of one of the farms, and I know his priority was producing fine healthy fish. Yes, there are losses, but so what?

BSE and foot and mouth? There are always problems in farming, it’s part of the way we live, and our demands for food.

Where can the best Samon be found? In Scotland’s rivers, but you’re not allowed to eat them.
